Pre-cat Lamda - failure symtoms.

  Black 182 FF
About a year ago my EML came on. Got it checked and apparently it was the pre-cat sensor, turned it off and that was that. The car then failed it's MOT on emissions a month or two later, but the tester told me to bring it back and warm it up properly next time and I did and it flew through so didn't really think too much about it.

I bought a cheap code reader after that and after about six months later the EML came on again, the code reader wouldn't actually give me a code, but did manage to turn off the light.

About four months down the line and the light came back on, then I switched it off and then in the last three weeks it's been on three times, twice in the last week. During this time I've notice MPG seems to have gone down 4 to 5mpg around town on the few miles I do (no idea on a long run as I haven't really got it out often) and maybe it's slightly noiser (maybe it's just me being paranoid). I do realise I'll have to get it checked to find out and I'll do so as soon as it comes back on, but I've just been putting it off recently as I do so few miles, but does this sound like the symptoms of a knackered pre-cat Lamda?
