Pre-reg cars and insurance, how does it work?

  Mini Cooper S sport
The car I'm getting next week is pre-reg, and I know that means that I won't be sent the V5 for 6 months.

Now, I got the reg number this week and I've arranged the new insurance. My insurance company asked if I would be the owner and registered keeper, and without thinking I said yes. However I HAVE now thought about it - and I'm not sure I will in fact be the registered keeper, even though I'll be the owner.

If you buy a pre-reg car, is it registered in a fleet company's name for 6 months? OR is it registered in MY name - but they keep the V5 for 6 months anyway?

I don't want my insurance to be invalid, and you SHOULD have a V5 in case you need to produce it.

So, do I call the car company and get them to clarify who the registered owner will be?

Do I call my insurance company and ask what happens if I'm not the registered keeper (which could drop me right in the s**t)?

OR

Do I simply apply for a new V5 using a V62 form, meaning I'll have it within 4 weeks instead of 6 months? If I do that, would I be listed as the first owner?

I really don't like the idea of my insurance possibly not being valid :S

Has anyone else bought a pre-reg car, what did you do?

You will be the registered keeper from the day you collect the car and will get the V5 within 8 weeks. Pre-reg is just the same as buying second hand. My current car was pre-reg

But they told me I wouldn't get it for 6 months! 8 weeks I don't mind, but 6 months? I'd better call the company and find out for sure if I'll be the registered owner.

  Shhh
I bought a pre-reg car in 2002.

I got the V5 about 12 months later, I bought the car and they said they will send the V5 away as them being the dealer. That was enough for me.

Get it in writing if you want..

But they wont hand you the V5..

Proof of ownership can be the receipt for the car..

Ownership isn't the problem - it's who the registered keeper is!

Reckon a V62 form is the way forward.

If the car has been pre-registered then that means the dealer will have been registered as the keeper, there is NO reason for the V5 to tak more than 8 weeks unless the dealer is doing something they shouldnt be!

Renault make them keep cars for 6-12 months (but obviously they just sell them) depending on discount given. They need to keep the V5 incase they get audited.

If you get pulled, just take the producer in to the garage and they will issue a letter to confirm that the car is yours.

If you have a crash..... Well, i've never encountered that one before.

Pretty much what every dealer is doing then! lol

Exactly - cheers Daniel!

I know why they keep the V5, that's not a problem. What I'm unsure about is who is listed as the registered keeper during that time.

I may be the OWNER, but who does the DVLA think is KEEPING the car?

If I have a serious crash or write-off within those 6 months, it could cause problems, because my insurance company will need to see the V5.

Therefore I either have to get one using a V62 form - or see if my insurance company will still insure me without me being the registered keeper (even though I'm the owner).

See the problem?

It is a problem RB, correct. But in the eyes of the law, YOU ARE NOT THE REGISTERED KEEPER/OWNER!!

If you apply via a V62, the garage will not honour it (DVLA checks up on it) and you will unearth a whole heap of trouble.

Blimey, you think too much.....

I do indeed..

From what I've read, the DVLA contacts whoever is listed as the owner/keeper, and if they get no response (which is almost certainly what would happen), they issue the V5 anyway.

I may well cause trouble but it's not my fault is it? It's not me who's done anything wrong :). If they were operating as they should be, the V5 should legally come with the car.

Anyway, I'm not doing anything until I get my car!!
