pre- reg

Nothing wrong with them mate.

Mine will be pre-reg. Technically it means that you are the 2nd owner and not the first. But it doesnt bother me, id rather be quids in .

I think the garage actually owns the car for a minimum period (30 days or 90 days, cant remember which) where it is registered on their fleet and then the car becomes yours. This is for tax benefits I think, so technically you dont own the car when you pick it up and this could apparently affect your insurance.

It is a really grey area at the mo and the rules seem to be bent alot so alot of people steer clear because it isnt clear what the deal is. A lot of people also arent told that the car is pre-registerd and find out after they have taken delivery of the car, this is quite bad on the seller for not informing people of what is actually happening and why they are getting a cheap car!

If you buy a car and are invoiced for it and receive a delivery date from a supplier how (unless there is outstanding finance) can they continue to claim a right of title?

There are no minimum retention period in law - theyre only imposed by the manufacturer to the franchise/ dealer - and there are plenty prepared to offload a car straight away. If a dealer sells you a car and hands over the keys they are obliged in law to notify the DVLA of the date of the change. If the date on the V5 differs from the invoice date / Receipt date id be straight on to the DVLA.

yes but the reason to pre-register the car is to register it in the dealers name so that they can cliam the tax back as it is a fleet purchase made by a company and then passed on to you after a certain period has passed .

There is a minimum period they have to have the car on their fleet to be able to claim the tax but most companies will give you the car straight away which is not correct and law abiding but you want the car and they want your money so they generally keep the V5 and then send it off after the 30 days with the change of ownership.

This is how I understand it to work unless someone can correct me, there was a new article a couple of months back stating how what a lot of dealers are doing is illegal because they dont hold on to the car for the required period to be able to claim the tax.

Another reason for pre-registering though is so that a dealer can hit its target in a particular month so they order the cars, register them in their name and because they hit a target with the manufacturer they get bonuses. I think the manufacturer will allow them to do a certain number of these and they possibly get to claim the tax back on these too.

Its a complicated business and there are a loot of grey areas and loop holes but not all that is carried out by dealers who pre-register the cars are legal.

This is how brokers are able to offer the discount that they do, they pre-register them to themselves and they claim the tax and sell on to you saving you a lot of money and manking them a fair amount too.

AFAIK
