Price/part number ball joints, 172

After ordering a pair of wishbones (from a clio breaker) and specifically asking for the ball joints to be in VGC and recieving them being completely fucked, i still require some.

I cant find anything on euro car parts, is this going to be renault only?

  Lionel Richie
renault only = complete lower arms

megane 2.0 ones fit, but i'm not a fan of using them unless i moddify them

Thats what i thought (well Matt brown told me actually), which is why i specifically asked for them to be good, when i rang them up they told me that 'its near on impossible to split the ball joint without breaking the gaitor, if you wanted good ones you should have bought new ones'
Strange, ive managed to break 15+ mk1's without tearing any ball joints to s**t.

He did say he would ring back with a price for new ones, i missed the call though, ill ring him back tommorrow and see what he says.

Fred in my local factors and the local "sc motors" which is my local chain, they both had the available. I'm picking them up tmrw infact, why wouldn you recommend against them and what would you modify???

  Lionel Richie
the hole size where they bolt to the lower arm is different and uses a smaller bolt which allows the ball joint to be bolted up out of alignment (only slightly) due to the hole on the lower arm being larger

i drill out the new ball joint holes and use the OE bolts = perfect

Cheers Fred, I have drill, and if I keep them in good nick (i.e if not siezed) I'll use standard bolts.

One last thing, I assume its the 12mm I want not the 10mm? As there was two options, but I'm quite sure I read somewhere it was 12mm.

I know I can't buy it from Renault but all the local motor factors stock it, so I guess its worth a try no?

Matt, any idea on my 12mm or 10mm question?

I'm interested too, been down to my local MFs recently and they can do each wishbone fully bushed/balljointed for £30 a side, I just need to know whether mine is a 10 or 12mm version.

Also, is it likely they can translate the Renault part number to a different brand/system part number to get the right one that way??

Same price from my local factors mate, but yeah NWP is a good shout as it gives you the right size straight away.

I'll update this thread tonight when I know if a 12mm fits my ph1!

They fitted on my Ph2 172 perfectly and even had new bolts with it.

Dunno if Ph1's are the same.

Yeah they are mate, I just need to know what size the bolts/holes are so I can get the right ones from the motor factors. I've already ordered in a 12mm, so I hope I'm right, or I'll be in "le shite"

What are the physical differences between the two types? Obviously the Cup has a slightly wider track, I assume they cater for that??

Lol, could you not jack car up on one of the front corners and measure them. :rasp:

I assume the 10mm will be a SAN513 CB1N and the 12mm will be the SPL CB1N

Sorry, I meant to confirm is the 10 and 12 mm size refering to the bolts that hold on the ball joint module to the wishbone?

I'll get my car up and measure it me thinks. I'm assuming then that the SAN513 CB1N and the SPL CB1N are the same lower arm with different joints pre fitted.....figures I guess lol.

Will dig out my vernier caliper.....

cheers lads, going to order them from NorthWest performance.
Cliospares said they can supply them for £1 cheaper, but i dont want to give that rude arrogant lad anymore money.

Ok so I ordered and fitted the ball joint,

For a Ph1 172 the size is 12mm (this size is the bolt holes)

Changing it was no real problem, however it did throw the tracking out, so warren (Brown Bear) was right.
