Problem!...HELP!!!

  is dirty.
Driving last night came to a stop then pulled off in first and there was a big bang/shudder so I pulled over to the side of the road to have a check. Before I got out realised my gearbox was totally screwed. Its as if it has all shifted back. Like neutral is where 2nd or 4th would be and say I am in 3rd driving and put my foot down the gear stick would be thrown right back. Managed to get the car home. What do I do now.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Rick.

ermm garage.. sounds like a new box is needed, as it doesnt sound like youve just thrown one cog, but saying that if u can still use all the gears its a bit odd

When i dad a VW polo last year i had a similar problem, gearbox mounting broke and it was nearly imposible to get into any gear, it felt like as i was moving the gearstick the whole gearbox was moving...

Didnt need a new gearbox they just replaced the gearbox mounting...

Dont know if this will help, as i said it was on a polo so it might be a completely different thing..

Probably the linkage.

Is there any oil leaking?

I would get it to a garage and get the linkage checked out.

could be linkage, could also be gearbox mount, sounds like the exact symptoms i had on my fiesta when the mount went.

Not happy at all. Just got in now from the local renault garage and have been quoted a price of £1230 for a repair of it all or £1450 for a new gearbox. The casing/housing has come loose and snapped off and its going to require all new housing etc. By the time it has been stripped, sealed etc thats the price I'm looking at. Funking Wonderful. He also said hes only ever seen it happen to one car before so lucky me.

if it's not pissing oil, it'll more often than not be the linkage or mount/s.

get it up on a ramp asap. :)

Okay cheers for that. The guy shook the engine and looked down and could see that something had snapped off the bolt/screw and worked out I would need repairs of £1200+..hope that wont be the case then.
