problems with catalyst clio 182

  Clio 182 cup
hello guys, I'm tired of having problems with the catalyst of my 182 every x years ... it always comes loose inside me and ends up making noise due to internal vibrations ... I have thought about taking it out and reinforcing it internally with solder although I would also like to ask you what Solution do you see or what have you done in these cases ... I want to continue to have a catalyst for ITV ... it is a clio 182

Ktec do a pretty decent sports cat to replace it with.

The original is worth quite alot of money in scrap, would cover most of the cost of a replacement.

Cheap generic catalyst, not as free flowing as the original or the Ktec item.

A decent sports cat isn't cheap

It's a tough one, go cheap ebay generic or Ktec sports cat. One way of looking at it is as @R3k1355 says, if yours is genuine you should get most of the price of the ktec sports cat for it. The worry for me would be that neither get you through the mot in a few years time, that said your cat is falling to pieces anyway. I'm still trying to make my mind up on this myself!

My (recently sold) 172 has an aftermarket one and passed it’s mot for years (I’d guess 7). My current 172 now has the eBay cat too. They do need to be HOT though but I don’t think they’ll necessarily stop working after a couple of years. They’re definitely not as effective at lower temps than OE but once they’re hot hot they will pass fine if everything else is in order.

I've done the man maths, selling it leaves enough left over to buy a ktec and a bushes and wishbone refresh! 😉

I’d rather have the OE one than ktec. I kind of get selling for a cheap one as it’d almost be worth the hassle but selling and buying an expensive but worse cat makes little sense. Keep the OE cat if you have it. For some reason on your last thread I assumed you didn’t have a cat at all.

It's looking pretty worn and tired at the joints though, I know I could get it off and have it welded. It's the freezing up of some cash that appeals

There's nothing wrong with these cats2u ones. I've been running one for 8 years now with no issues what so ever. Also didn't notice any difference to power when I went from a decat to this and works fine with my cams and mapping....(y)

In 2015 I fitted a 'sports' catalyst converter to my Clio Sport 172, included with a bolt-on s/s exhaust system from K-Tech Racing, and it works perfectly with none of the acrid smells that many original manufacturers' converters emit after a few years. The full free-flow format lifts torque quite significantly but is a bit noisier than ideal in some situations.

What put me off the Ktec sports cat was their own guarantee! They only offer 6 months, which shows how much confidence they have in their own product!
This is what put me off too.

I went with a Magnaflow custom 200 cell cat and got it welded into a Milltek decat pipe. The parts cost me about £110 at the time plus the welding cost on top.

I've just checked the warranty, the ebay ad advises a life time warranty on the cat, but seems like Magnaflow only offer 25k miles on the emissions. either way at the time it only cost £75 new, and the car isn't used daily. so 25k miles will last me a good few years.

I would note that this does sound louder than the standard cat, and probably closer to running a decat pipe, which is a plus to me at this point.

I have an pattern aftermarket cat fitted to mine, sailed through the last 2 MOT’s looking at my manifold flange, I’m going to have to get it replaced at some point in the future. However I think I’m going to go with a full Pure motorsport system and one of their high flow Cats. It will be expensive but I’m hoping opting for a full system will be a worthy investment. That said let’s see if my cheap CAT lasts another year!
