Project Back to Black

  Petrol Blue 182.
So after getting fed up of fixing the valver, driving it 5 miles and have to fix something else, decided to get rid of it.
After looking at a couple of cars, I was told about this one on pistonheads for a good price. I aranged to go and see it the next evening.

a week later I picked her up. The car had been sitting under a tree for what looks like forever, so it is covered in tree sap. Body work looks to be ok, rear tow eye cover is missing and theres a slight dent around the edge, indicating the previous owner has probably reversed into something. every pannel is streight with exception to the offside rear which has a very very slight car park dink in it.

The car needs a cambelt change and a slight whine on the gearbox, that taken into account I got her for a very good price.

Aim for me is to return the car back to completley standerd and in good condition. the F1's need a refurb, bonnet needs either a re-spray or need a new one, it looks as if some one has gone over it with a scouring pad! and it just needs a bloody good detail! steering wheel also needs a change, its horrible!

shes only on 86k, full renault history up till 09, reciepts after that.

Everything on this car is standerd bar the silly exhuast which im hoping to change and an induction kit, im not sure what it is.

Hopefully soon I shall have some pics of the car clean!

Re: My first sport - Ph1 172

Got the 172 cleaned last night, it's come up well but needs a proper mop with cutting compound, what ever was on the paint work has started to eat into the laquer.

unfotunatly the near side wing was blown in when the bonnet was sprayed so the top of the wing is badley marked like the bonnet. usual wear and tear on the alloys, so they'll need a refurb at some point but I can live with them for now.

Thanks to Guillaume for the help, I dont think he was expecting it to be as bad as it was

Looks good Ryan. Also very impressed that you've got from one french heap with a duff box to another ;)

Not to worry though, FailSport have the parts/fitting ability.

NB. No warranty given or implied. Ever.

Re: My first sport - Ph1 172

managed to get hold of a standerd head unit (thanks wokka) so set about changing over the aftermarket one :)

Before:

sterio8.jpg

The headunit didn't come with any radio keys, so pikey spec tools were involved

sterio7.jpg

After removing the headunit blue wires started appearing, after further investigating it seems the car has had a speaker upgrade (win) but the wires have also been upgraded, meening no standerd head unit tonight :(

sterio6.jpg

it appears one of the blocks wires having been cut (im presuming this block is for the speakers as there the same coloured wires connected to the non-standerd headunit via its block

sterio5.jpg

sterio4.jpg

it also appears to have some blocks missing? can anyone shed some light as to what to two small block holes are for at the top? cd changer and steering wheel controls?

sterio2.jpg

nothing displays on the screen on the top of the dash unit too, and when i press the buttons on the sterio it just beeps, I guess this is because of the code, how do I enter that?

so finally this is how it looks at the moment

Re: My first sport - Ph1 172

IIRC yes those back plugs are for a changer and wheel controls.

Entering the code without the display will be interesting as it shows the digits ! Use the stalk wheel to change the first digit, then the source button (I think) to move to the next digit and repeat for all four.

Re: My first sport - Ph1 172

You need the display and steering wheel controls to enter the code. Hopefully the wiring will still be there somewhere

Nope, ive always entered mine from the headunit itself, but yes the display would help...

Re: My first sport - Ph1 172

hmmm and will it display with just the manin blocks plugged in? (mine didn't) i quess ill have to go hunting behind the dash for the missing blocks, something I didn't want to do!

Re: My first sport - Ph1 172

Looking good old chum. The green white grey and purple wires are part of the aftermarket head unit wiring loom. you need to remove all of this and wire in to the standard loom.

Display wont show without the right wires connected. Steering wheel controls have them in I believe.

Get hold of a standard clio cage, a soldering iron, some solder and some electrical tape. Then bring the car to mine and I will re wire it all for you.

Re: My first sport - Ph1 172

Update - managed to find the missing blocks for the head unit :) car is now in the garage for its cambelt change. Crunching quite bad in 3rd on the gearbox now though. Better get it changed sooner rather then later!

Re: My first sport - Ph1 172

Small update:

Cambelt has been done :) and had a couple of days off work so set about doing odd jobs on the clio. finaly got round to sorting the head unit after driving about with wires hanging off.

luckily for me the original loom was still there :)

sterio9.jpg

half hour later all four speakers were connected to the original head unit

sterio10.jpg

Interior door handles were looking a bit ropey from the rubber coating peeling off. going to paint them silver when I've got time.

Re: My first sport - Ph1 172

Bit of an update for you.

Had the 172 detailed today to try and get rid of the grime! thank you ever so much to Magpie and Gullaume! It's alot better then what it is, it may need some more at some point to completly get rid of the etching within the laquer but for now its fine :D

also fitted my sabelt cup wheel but no pics of that!

sorry about the un-natural light and lack of pics, as you can see the bonnet is a right off and either need to re-spray that one or try and find a mint one!

How much is a carbon wrap on the bonnet ? Might look ok as the car is black.. could be subtle !

Out of interest, why did you go from the HU to a standard tape player and standard speakers ?! The standard HU is awful and that one looks to be a proper poverty spec one

Good luck with the car though... black Ph1s FTW :D

  V6 255, 172's, JCW,
Coming along very nicely Ryan. That roof was shocking, as you know.. but it's come up a treat, along with rest of the paint work. Not 'perfect' yet, but it's getting there, this was just the first round :) Realy quite excited at the thought of how this will end up looking after a couple of months further work. Back to the workshop soon I reckon eh! :)

Plan was to return the car to standerd bar a few choice mods. Still have the upgraded speakers, but I wanted the standerd head unit mainly so the cd changer would work

New gear box fitted :) and coilovers on! no more crunching in third, yay. however the car still whines which has been noted to a possible tensioner on the aux set up.

Bonnet should be being painted within the next couple of weeks along with the spoiler, I have some spacers too to go on to fill out the arches a little better.

Rolling Road day tomorrow so I shall get some pics tomorrow :) Just happy to have her back!

massive thank you to Mike @ FailSport! <3

Small update.

After the disaster at the RR day http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?622430-Surrey-Rolling-Road-Day-2012-Pics-Contains-Fail

Turns out that the Cambelt had been miss timed, I wouldn't have noticed tbh if I hadn't put it on the rollers, I dont drive it hard enough! car to me still pulled well.
The garage I had it done at didn't release the exuast or dephaser pulley. I'm not sure of the ins and outs behind it all.

Cambelt re-timed the correct way. and wow, what a difference! also had the Aux belt and tensioners done at the same time.

The brake light in the Cup Spoiler appears not to be working so thats something else I have to look into. Sigh.
