Project Clio...what would you choose?

Car  SchwepTek™
Out of interest would you choose a standard 182, 172 cup or 172 ph1 as the basis for a fast road weekend toy?

172 cup, already set-up with no aircon, ABS and other luxuries etc. best starting base IMO

Either a Ph1 172 or a Cup and then try and get it as close as possible to an ex Cup racer minus the Sadev.

How many people in this thread have actually owned all of the cars mentioned?

Even driven them? IMO, you need to try them all. Asking in this forum will just result in every owner recomending their own car.

If it was me, Williams 1st, 172 cup next. The rest need not apply.

is this another schweppy has changed his mind thread ?

get the cheapest one you can find and strip it, surely it wouldn't matter too much as to which one it was

I chose the 182 Cup, only 1*2 that doesn't offer any significant compromise...be that performance, price, weight or comfort. Ok A/C I could live without but ABS, it's a must on the roads up here.

I would say a williams first, much more rare.

Then a 172 cup as i found it more involved than the other's that are left to choose from.

But as the balding guru says drive them and then make you mind up.

If i was after a project car i'd choose a williams if I was willing to do more work on it because it is likely to need more work doing than a ph1 172.

If I didn't want to get my hands quite as dirty i'd get a ph1 172.

Depends. If you're planning coilovers etc then of the cars mentioned the PH1 would be the best bet. Cheaper, pretty much the same weight as a cup, better throttle response.

I know there are several junior Senna's on here, but the lack of ABS on the cup has always made it a non-starter for me. On the road in poor conditions it's useful.

Welcome to have a drive of my car fella.

Cheapest is the best option (take into account condition of existing engine, steering rack etc, e.g. how much is going to be useful and how much will need replacing so a Williams might mean more expense than a 172).

i'd still go for the cheapest in best condition......it wont matter once its stripped and coilovered.

ph1 172 or ph2 172 cup if money no big issue and both come standard, but id like a 172 mk1

Having driven Cup packed 182 and my 172 Cup, out of those listed would have to be teh Cup IMOAlthough if any "Clio" was an option as weekend toy then having had a nose round Foxys motor I really fancy one like that.

I agree tbh. I never owned a Williams, a friend did and it was so much fun just being a passenger! I had a Mk1 16v and tbh I found it more exciting and fun than the Cup! The Cup is definately more capable and quicker but just doesnt as much for me as a Mk1...
