Protected No Claims

Hello can somebody explain protected no claims to me.

As far as I was aware if for example you held 3 years no claims then an incident occurred which is your fault the protected no claims is in place so that at the end of the renewal you will have 4 years no claims (assuming you wont have any more incidents) but obviously the claim will have to be noted for future reference.

I was also aware that if you have protected claims protection that you essentially get 3 strikes, if you’re at fault this will be 2 strikes and if not at fault will be 1 strike.

Hopefully somebody can shine some more light on this, trying to help a mate who has been told something then something else. Was told the above, that he would have 4 years NCB at the end of the policy and protection is still in place if no more incidents occur but now he has been told it will only be 3 years ncb and that the protection has been removed.

Thanks

I thought you had to have 4 years NCB before you could protect them, no?

Most companies require 5 years before you can protect.

But to answer your questions:
The year you claim in will not add to your NCB.
For example, I had 6 years protected NCB and I made a fault claim. When I renewed I still had 6 years protected NCB... a year on and I've now got 7 PNCB.

Thanks,

He had 3 and got protected under them, so I gather the hole point in PNCB is that if you have 3 years NCB have an accident instead of loosing all your NCB's you will still have the same but unfortunetly just miss out on a year. Meaning he will have 3 again at the end of his renewal.

Imo not really worth the paper it's printed on. Let me explain.

You have a claim but keep 5 years no claims, come renewal they ask have you had a claim or accident you say yes, accident was £600 worth but I have 5 years no claims.

It won't matter how many years no claims you have they will hump on the renwal!

If you have an accident whether it's your fault or not you were still involved in an accident.

So they will take into account the 5 years no claims which will make a nice discount then add that you've had a claim for £600 and bamm you're still paying a fortune to insure your car.

I have 4 years no claims. I was going to protect them but you have to pay an additional £100 odd to do so. I think personally that is a rip off and insurance companys shouldn't charge you to protect them. As Gally said even if you make a claim, they will dry hump the s**t out of you still.

You can make a non fault claim and they still bloody whack £50 on your renewal. My renewal was the same as last year and I shopped around - bloody joke.

I would like to assume that if you have x amount of claims it will be better than having no claims with an accident on top. They probaly will rape him now though but I would like to think if you shop about you could get it around the same as what was paid before the accident.

Of course it's better to have protected no claims but some people are lead to believe it's something it's most definitely not.

I paid £30 extra to protect my NCB. When I had my fault claim (over £3000 iirc) I had 6 years PNCB.
When I renewed after the claim I changed companies, my premium was £12 more than the previous year, and I still had my 6 years NCB.

Win.
