i tend to use 1st personally

I've often thought about doing that, never really bothered though!
Did get my first 1.2 to pull off in 5th down a slight hill (slight is what it was, no underexaggeration) the day it was going back to renault to be swapped in, managed it but the clutch stunk for about 40 miles, had to do a big detour!

Has anyone found that the clio struggles to pull off in 2nd gear?..

Maybe your a s**t driver. The power (lol power, i mean peanuts) is from about 3k-5 and a bit k. Learn to drive. 2nd gear isnt much fun though its not a long gear and it only does about 50 3rd gear is fun, and so its 4th if you learn when to use it. But 3rd gear is the best.

Its s**t though, yes.

You're clearly on par with Lewis Hamilton mate...

I'm sure he often wonders why his 1.2 clio struggles to pull away in second aswell, dumbass. And to think the boys at Renault put all that effort into making a gearbox when some plonker tries to set off in second and complains that it struggles.

Learn to drive, not steer a car when going fast. Huge difference between driving a car and just driving.

A decent driving instructor would have told you to use 1st gear. Which country did you pass your test in? :)

lol.

2nd gear is the most fun by quite a way in the 1.2.

I can't see why anyone would pull away in 2nd gear in normal circumstances. The 182 is fairly happy pulling away in 2nd as I've done so on a couple of occasions by accident and then realised afterwards that I'd been in 2nd... but with a 1.2 you'd have to slip the clutch loads, why wear it out?

We get a lot of stick from our maintenance workshops at work about pulling off in 2nd gear in the fire engines, and they're all labelled up with "Always set off in first gear" notices, but the reason is that 1st gear is so incredibly short on the Volvo lorry (literally takes you to maybe 10mph) that it's a much smoother ride if you set off in 2nd... but in a car where you can reach nearly 30mph in 1st gear there really is no need to avoid 1st!

Type that again in German, it might be a bit easier to understand.

Ermm.. I think people have got the wrong end of the stick here.

What i meant was... not stationary and pulling off in 2nd... I mean when u're coasting at aroudn 5-10mph... then driving off...

i was told in my driving test that if you are on a hill heading down it it is ok to pull of in second once the car has started moving.

but i always pull off in 1st

my car struggles to pull away in 5th, it really annoys me having to change back to 1st all the time, so i just drive around in 5th

I think it's more a case of a bad description rather than us getting the wrong end of the stick to be fair ;)

5-10mph is still a little bit too slow for 2nd gear in a 1.2 really, unless you're pulling off downhill and that slope is still acting to increase the car's speed, as you make the change... but on the flat it's perfectly normal that the car may grumble a bit.
