Putting your foot down...

Is it just me, or do you never get to put your foot down these days?

Obviously the 1*2's really come alive at the magical 5k... I can only remember getting to 5k once this month :quiet: (in 2nd) it just seems kinda pointless having a car with any speed! I think having a sporty car is just for boasting down the pub now really :rasp:

Seriously considering downgrading next year, I'm just not getting enough out of it. I even typed 'diesel' into autotrader for the first ever time the other day  what's happening to me...

There is a nice dual carrigeway near thorpe park that i drive down if i go to the office, other than that my journey is mostly stop start in traffic lights.

id imagine there would always be temptation to step when the road is clear
however...

you just need the right roads at the right time mate then its all worth it. i often think the same as you are now but when i find the right road at the right time i wouldnt have it any other way. plus its nice to bost about down the pub like you say lol

  Shed.
As stated - Right roads - right time.

Leaving my gf's house at 1am in the morning in the dark in the freezing cold, icy roads, things can be pretty fun. A good 6-8 mile run with no cars is the perfect opportunity to drive like a b**ch.

There was a time when i could strip my old expression out and take it round the back roads during the day and have no one in front of me, however it is not so these days.

This is why I enjoy 5am breakfast runs and midnight ring road blasts.

There is no point trying to drive fast during the day. Too many police about and public that can't drive.

I know the feeling i don't drive my car hard a lot but when the times right its good to put your foot down. All be it i don't move very quickly but thrashing any car is good fun. Unless its a deisel... 4k change ups ftl.

i got caught speeding on that strip a few years back

yeah, they have those police ANPR and speed traps in the layby at the top, i always slow down when coming to the curve at the top, the layby is pretty hidden. A car lost control about a year ago there, swerved, clipped the policevan in the layby and ended up in a hedge acorss the road! It was in the local paper. Gutted .

Weekdays are spent saving fuel. Im on about 43mpg at the mo......the only time i go banzai is after 10pm or when the roads permit on the weekends.

Its kinda nice cos you pootle along during the week as if you were in something meek only for it to do a Jekyll and Hyde transformation as soon as you get a club foot....its great.

I enjoyed putting a rep-mobile 320d in his place today after the cheely sod tried taking a shortcut to get ahead of me, failing, and then deciding to go into the wrong lane at some lights in an attempt to cut in front on me... he filtered behind with his wife having a go at him.

Holy s**t I've never seen 33mpg let alone 43! :clown:

I said to a mate at work that I want something with power between 2k-5k really (supercharger!?) and he said... buy a diesel. He's just bought a brand spankers Renaultsport Megane DCi (I think that's right, 175bhp?) and he said the pull low range is brilliant... I need to have a go in this I feel!

^^I generally see between 38 and 40 mpg.

On topic theres plenty of place you can give it some beans around here on a saturday/sunday afternoon.

The willy engine was always good for coming on power early. Went right the way from 2k upward.

About the only time i put my foot down through 2nd and 3rd is joining mways on the sliproads these days lol ... too many blooming mobile cameravans around these days to have any fun. My 3 points were at 10pm on a Friday night from a 50mph dual carriageway cashvan :(

I absolutely love the look on bmw drivers faces when a clio is spanking them lol

lol :S do you seriously think I could have a problem? As said, I hardly ever rag the car! And I average around 26-28mpg...

Does seem odd to be fair mate........I dont claim to be a nancy driver at all times but there is a mahoosive difference between what your getting and what im getting.

I take it you reset the clock on every fill up? If you dont it will average it out over multiple tanks (in other words over 100's/1000's of miles) until you reset the clock which will not give you an accurate reading!!!

Gave the vectra SRi a good run the other morning at 5.30AM on my way to work, was nice to feel what the car can do cos my dad never takes it above 3000rpm. The clio gets a good run every week or two, just a quick blast from work to the house.

i was thinking about this yesterday the clios great if you've got the space to keep your foot planted but by the time you have done that you are doing 65/70 in second. I've got a remapped diesel vectra you can have that much fun when the turbo kicks in and you have maximum torque at about 2.5k revs. i think the diesels more fun day to day but no good for backroad blasts. oh the vec's running about 320ft lb of torque compared to the clios 156 ft lb lol

  320d
I would rather have most diesels over a 1.2 in all fairness;)

I would mate. I'd have gone for a dci 80 insted of my 1.2 for my first car. But they're rare and expensive so 1.2 was the better option at the time.

When i change my car, and actually have scope to choose a car rather than what i can afford insurance on it won't be a diesel though.

Yeah I reset it everytime! I do occasionally get just into the 30's (32/33 max really) but after another few days driving it's back into the high 20's :dead:

I look foward to your next post in the coming months...

"Sold the 182 bought a Golf Diesel.... help..."

I didnt buy my 172 just for the power of it, i bought it because i love paying a fortune for tax/insurance/petrol that coupled with the fact that you can feel every mother f**king nook, cranny and crevis on the road...

Welcome to hot-hatch ownership lol!

Audi's bore me. Only the RS4 and the R8 capture my attention.

I think if i was to get rid of the Clio i'd go DOWN in engine size.
It has to be light and it has to be fun, so i'd look at cars that get overlooked....Suzuki Swift Sport, 106 Rallye, Ford Racing Puma..something like that.
