query AD via web interface?

I know there are many tools that provide this, many expensive, but have you guys actually managed to query the DB via a web interface?

We use an export to a separate database for our intranet/ phone list. Might be the easier/ cheaper option?

At my old work, I wrote a PHP script to do it.. unfortunatly I dont have the script anymore but you could always code something yourself ?
