Question about catch cans on a car with ITBs

My clio 172 is on ITB, the crank case breather pipe is open (it has a make shift catch can at the moment). But Im looking at fitting a 2ltr catch can. It has to have the type that has the level visible on the side. So main question how do you fit it, most if seen have 3 pipes going into the can, obviously I would fit the pipe going from the crank case to the catch can...so what are the others for?

Only 2 pipes, one in, one out to breather filter.

Can see in this pic

Ahh I see, that helps a lot, so the out pipe to breather filter can be located anywhere right, where have you located yours?

How much build up do you get and how often does it need to be emptied?

What do these do exactly? I've always wondered... Store excess oil?

Im using a drink can at the mo to catch any vapour. It does fill up gradually over time and needs pouring out. Its like water with a bit of oil in there like Mayonnaise (dont even know if this is normal).

If you dont then it will surge out onto the exhaust manifold.

This is only for cars with ITBs fitted.

The one in the link I posted I think, has one line in, one outlet pipe and one for pouring it out?...Iv never used one before so uneducated in catch cans.

I would not like to say Knuckles as im still learning about the Clio engine. I am guessing if you have an open crank case breather then yes. But otherwise I would just leave it (unless you want it just for looks),however It might add 5bhp onto the Butt dyno when fitted though ;)

Mayonnaise is just condensation in the can mixing with the oil. Should really use a baffled one but it doesn't matter.

lol I'm not looking to fit one, I'm just sure I've seen them on standard engines. There's a thread about mayo build up in the 1.2s... Sounds like they could benefit lol!

Basically on standard engines with normal inlet manifolds they have a pipe in the cam cover that goes to the induction pipe after the air filter to recuiculate the oil vapour. With itb their is no where to put the oil back in the induction system so it gets stored in a bottle instead.

I'm pretty sure it is illegal to let the vapour escape into the atmosphere that why these sealed oil catchers are used and not just bottles?

Im looking at entering the MSV CDT ay some stage next year and want the car to meet the MSV Bluebook regs. It says if fitted with a catch can it must be minimum 2 ltrs and be clear or have a fluid gauge on the side (see through tube).
