Quick question regarding performance and economy

  2003 Clio 172
Hey all,

We all knw that I am trying to find the cause of a wee flat spot I am getting at about 5k rpm, visible on RSTuner with the knock signal heading skyward.

Well, maybe relating to this...or not, I have a question for you all.

I was just driving Bonk the other day, it was moderately damp but i gave it a wee bit in first gear.

Nothing crazy off the line, very civilised and at about 2k rpm i floored it.

I was quite surprised when the car didnt spin the wheels, not even a flicker on the tc light.

I was just wondering if anyone elses car does indeed spin the wheels when pegged in first, in damp conditions.

I dont know if it would be down to the rainsports i recently put on but i know my old civic would light them in similar circumstances with only 130bhp?

Might be another indication of low power or poor delivery

I have also noticed abysmal economy, perhaps high 20's....yet it does show 40 or so on the motorway if i drive like a pussy.

Also noticed an odd wee miss the other morning when i held the car at 2k rpm waiting for a clear in traffic, its was almost off a cylinder yet when i drove it was ok

Any and all thoughts appreciated as usual gang

Thanks
Andy

Mine is only a teeny weeny 1.2 16v, but even i get wheel spins. I get 42.6MPH, and i currently drive like an idiot. I know this wasn't really relevant but i thought any info might help you out :)

My 172 will definitely spin the wheels a fair amount in damp conditions in 1st, and I have pretty decent tyres on too (I have no TC). I'd have to start off at about 3000rpm+ for it to happen though. As for economy, my car averages 33/34 MPG per tank and according to the computer on motorways around 42-44MPG. You checked your coil pack and HT leads recently? I've had a bit of trouble with mine over the past few weeks causing my car to misfire at low RPM's and stuttering at around 5000rpm..turned out to be damp HT leads which ended up drying out and fixing itself just as my replacements arrived  typical!

If not perfectly straight ,in 1st gear , my 172 will spin the wheels slightly at about 500RPM at full throttle without any clutch manipulation and on a dry road.
on a wet / even a dampish road ... 1st gear is for parking only ! the wheels will begin to loose grip at 3000rpm and 1/2 throttle ...
I have no TC , I've owned it from new, Mobil 1 every 3k /shell optimax/never been up a kerb/ 70,000 miles / 42mpg pussy m/way/36mpg regular(85) 27 mpg about town / new goodyear eagle F1's every year

Wait for the next damp day, go out and boot it ! Don't wring it's neck too much , but even with TC , with spirited driving you should be able to spin the wheels a bit or definately feel the TC cutting the power (don't trust them lights too much, they're not correct even on my new astra!)

Nah, I definately cannot spin the wheels in first without provoking it through clutch abuse.

That leads me to believe there is definately something amiss.

Never checked my coil pack/leads yet as I have the timing to check first.

The car feels absolutely ordinary below 5k rpm......no more power than a 1.4 astra tbh.

Over 5k it is definately shifting and isnt slow, I just thought it would be wayyyyyy more gutsy.

Yeah , they are terrible at low revs , but if you drop the clutch in 1st , just at 2000RPM , gradually add throttle to the red line , then change to 2nd and full throttle through all the gears ... it should go like hell ! cos you'll always be high in the revs ... acceleration between 5000rpm and 7000rpm at full throttle in low gears should be breath-taking IMO !

Yeah, its not.

I came from a 1.6i-16 Civic, you know the CRX shaped one?

And well, this is just as breathtaking as that.

I expected a night and day difference which I have not got, but I also know that Honda made some bonkers engines back in their day.

The Civic was soooooooo gutless but with 5k on the clock it was utterly nuts for the redline. This was not a vtec either by the way (out of choice)
