Rear ARB - Insurance

  FF 182
After waiting 10 or so weeks for my whiteline ARB to turn up I fitted it and then went declaring the mod with my insurers, Admiral. I rang them up and they said that they couldn't insure me with that mod on my car, they said its possibly to do with my other suspension mod (eibachs) which i have declared under the description of lowered suspension <5cm. They pointed me in the direction of Adrian Flux who specialise in modified cars.

Im a bit pissed off although it is mainly my fault for not checking with Admiral before i bought it, typical!

Im concerned that if i change my insurers the price of my policy is going to rocket as when i originally got my insurance for the first time 2.5 years ago Admiral were the cheapest by far. Im 23 with 3 points.

Has anyone else had a similar issue or is anyone else with an insurer (maybe Adrian Flux) who isn't that expensive and lets you declare your mods?

Advice would be appreciated

Ive just renewed with Brentacre for the second year. No additional cost for

Whiteline arb
FK Coilovers
JMS induction kit
Front strut barce
Aftermarket steering wheel
Decatted ktec stealth exhaust
RS Tunning remap

Dan.

Just added my rear arb, aftermarket steering wheel and brake upgrades to my policy with flux with Sportlines, solid top mounts, front and rear strut braces already on it with no charge's at all.

Thanks for your comments, I presume you pay a bit more on the premium if when you declare your mods they don't cost anything?

Emma do you find Flux cheap or expensive? If its not too rude to ask, how much do you pay for your insurance? Like i said im 23 with 3 points my own policy for a couple of years m&d as second drivers and i paid £1100 in March.

Nope. Brentacre were the cheapest last year and this. The policy ive got is i can do pretty much anything to it bar, itbs, turbo etc. Unless i want to pay a bit more that is.

I always thought an ARB would fall under the category of suspension changes (other) wuth admiral, might be worth asking them about it that way?

Impreza - Ill have a look into Brentacre could be worth a shot.

Beef - I thought that too but when i was on the phone to them yesterday they asked what mod it was and had to go ask their manager who said that it wasn't possible to insure me.

When I renewed brentacre was £20 more expensive then adrian flux. When I renewed I was 26, 8 years no claims, 1 non fault accident and no points I pay £497.

The good thing with flux and brentacre you can pretty much do what you want to the car without increasing power of course and it adds nothing to your premium.

Sky, Greenlight, Brentacre, .. modified specialists don't mind mods as it's their target market!

They wouldn't be able to provide your Mum with insurance for her Micra, but a modified Clio is obviously on their game plan.

No point asking how much anyone pays for their insurance. Unless it's your identical twin brother, living in the same house, and you've had an identical driving past, you're unlikely to be comparable.

Did you actually say you had a decat or something like "stainless steel system from the manifold back"???

I thought no company would insure if you mentioned the word decat as they're technically not road legal???

Yep definatly de-catted. I spoke to another insurance that wanted proof of an mot before they would insure me, with the cat on. That was flux from memory

I never told Admiral about my RAWB. Looks like a broken bit of the car tbh.

In the unfortunate event that the rozzers pull you over for whatever reason and give your car a once over and ask you if you have declared your mods, and then they check - your stuffed, technically driving with no insurance which plod take a very dim view of and you COULD have your car seized and/or crushed.

Nope, well not with me. To be honest its unlikely in an event of an accident they would be able to tell its been done

Yeah ive always thought that about a remap. I got a quote from brentacre which came in at 80quid more than admiral but has the bonus of been able to modify, got a quote too for a 1988 panda 4x4 which i have my eye on and brentacre were quite a bit more than admiral on that one. Flux was a good 500 quid more than admiral!

A 1988 Fiat panda? Thats a blast from the past. Even if you take into acoount the £80 difference it gives you the freedom of doing stuff without the price increase, just make sure you tell them anytime you change something. Would they not match the quote you had off Admiral?

Yes a 1988 Fiat Panda 4x4, its light, cheap has 4x4 and bags of character oh and its a minter for its age. Ive already had a ton of stick for it so anymore wont hurt. I can justify the 80quid difference for putting the ARB back on, when/if i come to changing the insurance i will try push them down in price a bit see what happens.

Paint it matt black and then see if a rozza spots it :)
