rear beam

  LY 182
need to think it through a bit more than that fella, you are wrong....

rear drums work BETTER than rear discs, by quite alot... the only problem with them is that they fade too quickly due to being an enclosed design they dont realse heat quick enough, not a problem you are going to get on the rear..

the reason your rear brakes arent doing much is down to the bias.. they will only be pulling up 50kgs or there abouts to stop the rear locking up before the front.. dont matter if you fit range rover sport brembo brakes to the back,, it will still only pull up 50 kg

get yourself a bias valve first.. do away with the factory one and have a play with how much force you can put to the rears before you end up backwards.. trust me on that one

mines at 180 bhp and rear drums and its fine...

the other thing you need to consider is it dosnt matter if you have a 75bhp car on standard brakes.. you give it 1000bhp if you want and unless you physically drive it faster standard brakes will be fine

brake manual brake bias valves are available from 'rally design' etc. The standard bias valve is attached to the rear beam iirc? You will find if you look at the design and think about it that the drums provide a little extra leverage and more braking force (per input force). This really shows when you compare the effectiveness of the handbrake on the MK1 16v and the lesser MK1 models.
They are fairly hopeless when called upon for track use tho.
