Remove Power Boost Valve

Hi there,

ive got a PBV on my 1.8 16v and im thinking of removing it - its never been set up properly and im worried it could be causing damage or problems (mainly idling)...

the question is, I have cams and a HP Stg 2 chip so is it really needed?

Also, do you think itd make much difference to performance removing it?

Just book it in for a rr set up cost me £60 for mine to be set up and to try a few air filter combinations. Gave another 3bhp + might have been more as it was already fitted.

Got a quote for a RR session - 100quid! TBH i dont fancy coughing that up if i can remove it with no negative effects...

I was kinda under the impression that with cams you could get away with either the chip or a PBV (i.e dont strictly need both) but unsure. Surely if it aint set up right, id be better with it off?

yes, but its in newton stewart, hes in aberdeen!

was the chip mapped after ur mods? if so itll be fine 2 take it off. as it stands, it wont do any damage......

you could just tap a pressure gauge in the fuel lines and just adjust it to increase the pressure above standard slightly. standard fuel pressure is approx 3 1/2 bars.tweek it up 1/2 a bar and see how it goes.

Cheers colin - just remembered about Ricky Gauld a few hours ago!

Anyways, the chip is basically mapped to my mods - its a HP one for their stage 2 conversion (basically everything i have on it minus the gasflowed head) so should be near spot on with my current setup. Trouble is, their stage 2 conversion includes a PBV as far as i can tell so the chip may take account of this - removing the PBV may cause the car to underperform. The question is, would it perform better with the PBV removed or with it on, albeit wrongly adjusted?

I think i may try removing it this w/e to see if theres any difference (been in the mood to go standard of late) if theres definately no chance of damage (running lean maybe). If theres no noticeable difference, then ill flog it and earn myself some cash! Guess im too lazy/tight to have it set up properly.....

i would set idle at std 3bar, since its rising rate is 1.7 itll provid more pressure than the std reg with no vacuum.

take the reading @ full throttle forgot to say that. plumb in the gauge and then roadtest it to get an accurate reading.

Cheers BenR - will try and get hold of a guage for the w/e. Erm...do you think thered be any probs/noticeable performance drop removing it considering my current setup?

probably wrong but i thought standard fuel pressure @ full throttle would be around 3 1/2 to 4 bars max.

all the later petrols use a constant 3 1/2 to 4 bar at all throttle positions.i realise a valver with the fuel pressure valve working on manifold pressure would make the fuel pressure lower at idle etc but i would have thought it would be around 3 1/2 to 4 bar at full throttle(using the standard valve)

Standard pressure for the valver is 3 bar at idle. Mine was set up on the rr at just over 3.5. Not taking the lines off again to measure:p. But around 3.5bar is what you should be looking for. But best bet is a rr set up as the engines do varry.

Just to give you an update as I removed my PBV at and replaced the std fuel regulator today;

Basically its miles better - my idling problems have gone and it appears to be running stupid quick compared to what it was - very happy! Obviously, im not going to claim that PBVs are rubbish as im sure if i had got my fat arse in gear and had it set up properly itd be even better than it is now. However, it appears that an incorrectly set one can be very detrimental!

Thanks for everyones help - ill probably refit it at some point using the info youve given me above (and when i can get to a RR!)....erm, "ill do it properly next time!"

:D
