Removing High pressure hose off Steering rack

  Dodgy one
How the hell are you meant to do it? I've just took a gander because mines gone and got wet through and bloody cold in the process, I got as far as removing the inlet and a heatshield bolt lol

I'm assuming you get at it from the top?

What do i need to remove to get at it and remove it?

Thanks

seriously awkward because of access; i ended up using a very long screwdriver and knocking the nut round with that and a hammer, from above. need to be careful/whatever you do as the nuts are alloy and easily threaded

be interested to know if there's an easier way, or some magic tool

Yes magic tool their is. It's a deep 17mm and 19mm socket with the side
cut away produced by snap-on.
Will try and post pic later if I can find the said tool

I used an open spanner that was ground down on the sides. Removing the 2 lower pipes gives more room to work as well. All done from under the car, lift it as high as you can.

Lambda socket?

I gave up on it, I was lying there in the Rain thinking WTF am i doing :S threw the towel in and Rang the local specialist, Quoted me 4 hours (£160+VAT) for them to remove the pipe, Ring me i run to Pirtek and get a replacement then they refit it and flush the system through with new oil! oh and i provide the oil.

4 hours a bit much i thought, hes probrably quoted for the time where my car is sat on a ramp though.

May have another bash tomorrow morning, If i get it off by 10 i'l ring him to cancel

f**k grinding down my sexy spanners lol aint got any "cheapies" either

i also butchered an open ended spanner, trying to make something that might work (failed)

one of those lambda socket things sounds handy, if it'll fit

It's no where near 17mm. much smaller. As I said earlier remove the other pipes around it at the rack end then it's easier to swing a spanner.

That ounds like the low pressure one from the header, Sure i had a 17mm spanner in my hand earlier :S

i'm sure the spanner i had a go at was 17mm, but there may be different sized unions for the different racks (?). vague recollection that the other feed pipe was a different size as well and not sure which is which

Maybe you have a bigger one than me!

From what I can remember, there are four pipes screwed into the rack, close together. The 2 closest to the ground have to be removed first and the third is the high pressure pipe that goes to the PS pump. But 17mm. is a mystery.

My Plan as mine has gone on the bracket at the front of the box, If Pirtek can do it the bracket will have to go and it be repaired on that section and i'l have to use a hose clamp to secure it (then knowing my luck it'l go round the back of the box lol) That is one of them ideal as it keeps it pretty much factory!

My 2nd option and probrably the best IMO is from the PAS sensor run a pipe down to the corner of the subframe where i can secure it get a 90degree connector fitted, Then run a pipe under the airbox and connect it onto the existing pipework at the rack end,

My theory is its the best way as been all rubber around the engine, where the vibrations are theres no metal pipes to get fractured and theres going to be a fixing point either end of the modified section, Both the sections will also be replacable rather than been one complete pipe too. This will not only make fitting easier but also removal and replacement in the future.

I did consider running a length of hose around the subframe on the gearbox end and back to the rack, but couldnt see any way of me securing it in place and when it goes back up to the rack its going to be a squeeze to get it over the dogbone and selector without it touching anything or been snagged.

£52 :D Two flexis, a 90degree piece and 3 unions along the line, Piece of piss to fit and remove now, X fingers no leaks for the future :)

Bloke wanted to have it done for tomorrow lol,

'erm slight problem then I need it today, my cars stuck on a ramp in a garage' He said 'it'l be late afternoon :( 'Wheres the car' In a garage in Starbeck (13miles away lol) 'f**king hell' he goes lol I'l do what i can, he had it done in 2 hours and had no more work to do lol hahahaha

Dropped it off and should see her back on the road tomorrow, not drove it since the weekend :( been in the Trooper boooooring

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm seriously stuck on this!

Doing a steering rack on a 182 at the moment, but getting the hoses off the old rack seems to be a right t**t!
Renault have stupidly fitted flare nuts rather than a nice simple banjo bolt and to make things worse you can barely get a spanner anywhere near them!

On the car I'm working on, the flare nut has seized onto the power steering pipe so as I'm trying to undo the nut the whole pipe is trying to turn which could cause it to split and from what I've heard they are seriously pricey to replace!
Looks like I'm going to have to heat it up to unseize it as I've tried spraying WD40 till I'm blue in the face but it hasn't worked!
I also can't see heating it up working that well either due to the materials that the nut and the pipe are made from.
