Renault Reliability

  Saxo
Hey,

registered on here to ask this one question.

  Clio Dynamic S 2.0VVT
Can't speak for the 197 but neither my Dynamic S 138 (2007) or the wife's Initiale 1.6 VVT (2006) have had any faults at all

Dads scenic did 120,000 miles, not ONE thing went wrong, didn't even blow a bulb and he crashed it twice.

But my 172 on the other hand......

Ive had my 182 2and a half years, needed tyres, new pads disks, new rear shocks, wear and tear! never let me down, best car Ive ever had.

  Clio 182.
I dont think they are unreliable. As in, it wont break down on you.

BUT. Build Quality is an issue (maybe not so much on the 197) and they are expensive to run (tyrers, pads, servicing etc). Will prob wear faster than other cars.

Build quality on the new Mk3s, like the 197, is a huge step forward over the Renaults of old. Also, all 197s are under 3 years old, and so still under manfacturers warranty - so if you do have any niggles, they'll get sorted out for free anyway. And if you're looking at a new one, then you get 3 years warranty. And don't let him give you any rubbish about dealers always getting out of paying warranty claims - cos a lot of old people seem to think that for some reason - it's just a load of rubbish. I've never had a problem, nor do I know anyone that's had a problem, and the only problems I've read about on here were with either 3rd party warrantys, or 2nd hand Renault dealer warrantys on cars over 3 years old.

But more to the point, if it's your money, do it anyway, if he's paying for it, think yourself lucky and be grateful for whatever you get.

if it makes you feel any better my car is a 172 and in its life all its had done that was "major" is the cambelt service. Other than that its been fault free and sitting on 60k without any niggles.

Mine is a 2004 dynamique 1.6 so even less care and attention gone into making it than the RS's lol. Nothing major with mine either, apart from the inevitable 1.6 engine coil changes lol

Ive a 172 cup and no reliability issues only build quality and routine parts i.e tyres, pads and shocks. At the garage it unusual for a broken down renault to come in other than servicing and wear and tear items.

I wouldnt say there absolutley solid, just general wear and tear and even though my 172 is 7 years old i have only had to change the parts that are suceptibal to breaking, i.e bearings, coil springs, etc etc

You will here alot on here about people re-placing or fixing suspension but the truths in the roads, there farking shocking.

If your old-boys worried about reliability then buy a CTR or FFS

imo it did have a bad rep but the 197 seems to be much better built than cars from the late 1990's early 2000's

Same with all cars really, you buy a pup & it'll break down & be costly. You get a nice cared for example, you'll have a happy ownership experience:)

  LY V6 with Recaros
I've never had any problems with either of mine in 3 years of owning one. Get a cared for one and I'm sure it will be fine. Your Avatar says you have a Saxo, I would say the clio would be just as, probably more reliable than that. I had one before the Renault and had more problems with that tbh.

engine is reliable but everything around it falls off

To be fair I don't think that's at all true anymore. Well, the engines are reliable heh, but also things don't seem to fall off like they used to. Although, has anyone ever had anything literally fall off, excluding rusted through exhausts and the like as that happens to any car?

and your old man let you have a saxo. Hmmmm. ;)

Welcome btw.

I've driven clios for approx 100k miles and the only one to let me down was my 172 - a couple of days into ownership.

Cupster

AA on speed dial helps!

Nah, their ok if you look after them. I have had two cups now and the only thing to fail me was a rear shock! Had s**t loads of probs with my golf v6 and various fiestas though!

......thats not to say they don't have their 'features' though, lol
