Replacing thermostat and coolant change

I'm changing my coolent tomorrow and thought I'd fit a new thermostat from eurocarparts. I was reading the guides and heard a gasket seal for the thermostat housing mentioned. Will I need to get one and if so where from or is it the black thing around the thermostat that I take off?
