Rev limiter on 172

  Black Ph2 172
hi guys, i swear the rev limiter on my car nw kicks in 400pm earlier than it used to (6,800 vs. 7,200). cn anyone shed any light on this?

thanks

the engine should have been warm enough as when I accelerated hard I had just been on the m3 for half an hour going at a constant 70 mph!

I tried 2/3 times, as I think I have mentioned on this site before at high revs my car makes a whilsting noise - don't know whether this has anything to do with it?

If the engine was warmed up but it was limited to around 6700-6800 could be possible coolant temp sensor fault.

Rev Limiter is variable dependant on oil temp/pressure. If you had been cruising on the M3 its likely your oil would be cooler, if you gave it a bit a few times, you'd soon see 7250rpm as usual.

Yeah, it kicks in earlier when the engine isn't up to a certain temp. Although I had this on Saturday. I overtook a van going up a steep hill, floored it in second, and was watching the road ahead obviously, and just as I went to change gear, the limiter kicked in. Thing is I presumed I'd be on the normal limiter as had been driving for 15 mins by then!!! So confused.

Mine catches me out every now and then too when overtaking, thnk it will be warm and isnt. Look like a right schoolboy when your half way past someone and you bounce off the limiter:eek: ,

ah ok i will wait for my car to get warmer and try again! air intake - hw much for a replacement? also is it worth getting a performance one?

Nothing to do with oil pressure/temp, its based off coolant temp. Its got to be >85c for the higher limiter.

no, its the air intake...

Are you sure fella? Doesnt sound like an induction noise. just a whine that gets louder/higher pitched the higher the revs. I notice it more in 4th post 5k revs.

i dont know if its the same noise we're talking about, but when i nail mine in first and second, in the higher revs theres 'progessive' whistle, like a turbo would...

Yeah, my g/f's old one made a bit of a noise. Bloke at Renault said it was it struggling due to having f**k all power being a 1.2.

but my 172 does the same thing :)

defo a whine and whistle when going upto high revs.. it is not a bad noise to be fair.. just assumed the engines make that noise.

is something wrong then?

The noise between the 1.2 and the 2.0 engines are different.

The 1.2 is a whiny noise, doesn't really sound anything like a turbo, more like it's going to go bang. I used to cringe at the noise. The 2.0 is a proper whistling noise, and I reckon it's to do with the air intake personally, as when I changed filters, the noise changed too.

got to admit I didn't notice it when I had my induction kit on for a few days but now I have replaced it with the standard airbox until I get a decent one with caf.. it is back! lol

i had same problem when i first got my cup, turned out i had a sticking thermostat, confusing the car into thinking it was cold, new one later and it hasnt done it since ! be worth checking wasnt an exspensive fix.

yea mine whistles at high revs unal, glad it sounds like normal.

Cool. I just assumed it was the cheesebox falling apart. It is higher pitched so it sounds pretty normal then.

Been out a couple of time since I posted I'd never thrashed it... Guess what. Didnt thrash it. I can hear the distant sound of my wallet being raped after 5.5k.

You guys must be all deaf.

ok yes mines a 1.2, a giving the fact you (xzibit) have never seen/ heard my car being driven, you cant say the noise am i describing is a whine. it isnt. its a whilste, apparently like the 172's have...

Well, this is true, I can only go on the noise my g/f's old Dynamique (same car as you) made. Which was a different noise. Do 1.2's even have the power to suck air in?!?
