rev limiter question

  Renault Clio 1.8 RSi

i have a couple of questions about the rev limiter:

1. at what engine speed does it cut in?

2. by what method does it kill the revs?

3. does hitting the rev limiter gradually knacker the engine? i guess its purpose is to prevent knackering the engine! but i mean are the oil rings or something similar more likely to go as a result of using the limiter about once a month for 4 months?!

cheers guys

I hope not! I hit the limiter v.rarely, within 7 months about 4 times. Only when gettin beat and have to try harder!

it protects the engine, i hope, ive hit it in every gear in the Cup, i didnt think it would come on in fifth but beleive me it does. Can it be taken off.

well it wont nacker the car hittin the limiter, its the same as revin jus below it but it does mean the engine wears quicker due to excessive raggin!

cheers guys

Wow ! what did the other clock say ?

If you get the rsport ecu it will rev to nearly 8000. I hit it most weeks so it better protect the engine !

My 95 1.4RT has a limiter, cuts in around 6500 revs. Mine hits it regular, like once every week at least for 2 1/2 years and its never had a problem

Theres no point being able to rev past the limiter anyway unless your car has wild cams or something. Your peak power is usually just before the standard limiter. Mine was raised to about 7800 and when I had the car RRd peak power was about 6600 ish. So whats the point keep going till 7800rpm

Also AP22 runs were better changing just after 6600rpm even though it would happily rev to 7800.

Well raising the limiter would help 0-60 sprints on summit like the willy would it not? Seen as the willy needs to change to 3rd to get to 60. Might also help the 1.4RT owners as I know my limiter cuts in about 50-55mph I think in 2nd.

2. by what method does it kill the revs? i belive it does this by cutting the ignition (anyone any idea how it does it on the dci my guess is by cutting fuel flow

the rev limiter is there to stop excess wear i recon renault gave themselves a little space capacity to ensure that even if the car is driven for 3yrs and 60k on the limiter then it would still be ok. so hitting it once a montjh should be ok

imagine how hire/courtisy cars are driven and therey are still going. During the few days i had one it kept hitting it and i cannot see it having any effect on the engines life span.

There is a soft cut limiter and a hard cut limiter.

Soft cut is when the spark in each cylinder is missed out in turn (so every 3rd spark will not happen), and hard cut is when both fuel and ignition is cut on all cylinders.

Even at those revs. If your running with Synthetic oil. Wear is virtually Non existent. More like to Stress a component too much and break it rather than wear it out!

Pretty sure thats rite ask BenR. Hire cars are fun hehe!!

Well, I think I have one on my 1.2.. Mk1, Phase3.

Gave it some welly in 2nd the other day and it was like hitting a brickwall after 6k.. just like I put my brakes on.. That musta been the hard limit then, heh..

Unmistakeable Sound when it does!!!

And like Daz says like hitting a Brick wall in lower gears!!

hum...

the rt std ecu cuts at 6500rpm. No point of going up there since its a lazy engine and you will get better times on 0-60 if you upshift between 5500-6000rpm.

reving every gear till the engine cuts will make you LOSE time!!! No point of letting that happen!!!!!!
dont know if it kills engine health by abusing from the hard cut. Theres really no point on letting it cut. oh well...

btw, engine cuting wont save you if you downshift like a maniac! so, go easy on downshifting and always check if its hiting no more than 8000rpm when doing it.
