rev limiter

  E55, KitCar & '85 Quattro

umm, not really proud about saying this, but i found out that my clios rev limiter is lower wen the car is cold..!

was racing a zetec_s and found out that i had to change up at 4500rpm in each gear (up to 3rd!)

incidently, how do rev limiters work and why do they make that du-du-du noise wen u hit it?

-phil-

Probably to protect engine.. have a lower limiter when the engine is cold - I think 172s have something similar.

4500 is low tho..heh.

yeh, well 1st was practically finished by the time my foot hit the floor completely!

Maybe you had the auto choke still on and thats why it was so low.

Im just guessing!

Mine goes 7,200rmp from start up mate, sounds fishy to me, its controlled by the ECU and will be the same in each gear if all is well.

The noise you describe is the ecu cutting power as it hits the limit.

Once it hits the limit it drops off and then powers again hitting the limit again, so on and so forth cousing the brum brum brum sound! Ideally you change up before that happens though!

And yes its to stop people from ragging the fek out of their cars and making the engine go bang!

Although my mates Nova SR (few years back, before any one starts) had a mechanical one that didnt work!

Matt, dont you have a Mk1 16v?

I know on Mk2 172s.. the limit is definetly lower when cold.. and once everything gets warm, the limit changes!

But yea.. limiter should be same in all gears..

Yeah, MK 1 16v - ST PTH didnt mention he had a MK 2?

Perhaps more modern cars have this but must say I never heard of it!

I cant believe youve all thrashed your cars from cold.
Oh well I suppose I did it with my older cars.

& it used to be so easy to take the rev limiter off. Just taking the distributor cap off & putting a std rotor arm on.
God knows what u have to do now to turn it off.

& whats that "du-du-du noise". Something to do with the conga?

Just outa interest what is the rev limirter set at on the mk1 1.2?

Iver found that peak power is around 4000 rpm, and theta if i take iot up to 6, 6.5k, then change up it returns to arounf 4k in the next gear

yup, all true dink.

(the last one was made up tho......)

my m8 "rekons" hes done 130 downhill and it went off the rev limiter (as on the older ones they stop at 7 right?)...but im not sure if i believe it as mine seemed pretty much fully done at 123ish on the flat.
