Reverse Lights & MOT's

Do your reverse lights need to be working for an MOT?

Over the last month mine are kind of intermittent, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. When they don't, you have to ram the gear stick into reverse to light them up.

Is this a fail?

Either way, what may be the cause and is it an easy/cheap fix?

The MOT is booked in for tomorrow.

don't think you actually need reverse lights for MOT's. Unless that changed literally the other day when new rules came in.

there "were" a courtesy light, ie not an MOT issue, but the new rules may have changed things

Reverse switch on the gearbox surely?

Very cheap and easy fix, you'll get covered in gear oil though.

I've checket the government site and it doesn't show anything, might mention it anyway and get them to fix it before hand, they are a good cheap local garage.

reverse lights not needed for mot. i know it sounds crazy but its true. best to get it sorted for you're own safety tho tbh. yes, the gearbox reverse switch is an easy and fairly cheap fix.

all sorted at the garage, I can now see reversing (more importantly, people know I'm reversing!!).

Only needed a ball joint changed and it passed fine.
