reverse lights not woking...and its not the bulbs!

Hi

My reverse lights are not working. Thought it was just a simple case of needing new bulbs which i changed yesterday but still no joy.
Went to Halfords and they said lights are fine and fuse is fine.
They said that there is a problem with the reverse switch on the gear box.
Any one else had the same problem? Is it expensive to fix?
