revs!!!....

advice please, i am probably the only person on this site who bought the 172 with power not top of the list, so my question is, if I do not regularly go to 6500 revs etc, what will happen to the the engine, I tend to stick to around 4000, I have a sub concious thought that thrashing the engine means damaging it, will the engine become a bit blocked up , or is 4000 enough to keep it clear, all thoughts welcome..

I really dont know, but I tend to drive my car sensibly most of the time and give it a thrashing when ever the mood takes me, about 3 or 4 times a month or so....It always seems better just after....or it could just be me high on adrenaline!! :D

I had an XR2i that hadnt been thrashed until I got it. It was high mileage but felt so responsive compared to others of the same age with lower miles. When it did start to break tho, it deteriorated fast. Lasted me 3 years and then it was fecked!!

it wont make any difference to the engine. If anything it will keep it in better condition. No manufacturer will design a car that has to be driven balls out or not at all!

its good to give a car a wee thrash (or at least raise the revs a little) for one simple reason. When the pistons reaches the top of the upstroke, it changing direction very quickly indeed (with a huge downward acceleration force, and the conrod and whole assembly actually stretch a tiny amount, with this amount being determined by engine rpm. After many miles on most bore surfaces a small lip appears marking the point at which the rings stop thier upward movement. If this happens, and then the car gets a bit of thrash, reaching revs its never seen in its life, the rods stretch a little further and the rings are now crossing past the small lip. This thrash may now have sent the engine along the path to oil burnng and ruin, and outright instant failure is not unheard off in such situations. However this is extreme but does happen, but if you never rev it yourself, its a problem for next owner!
