right im fedup with this flippin knocking

  53 Clio's & counting
right guys you gotta help me here

i get a knocking noise mainly in first, when the wheels scrabble for grip ie when pulling fast out of a junction. is does it when in a straight line, also when turning, its like a loud knocking, thudding noise, and also the engine feels loose,as if the mounts were worn.

now i thought this originally,so i bought an uprated dog bone mount from hill power, then a new top mount (the one that bolts to the inner wing) and the gearbox mount under the battery brand new from reanult, and the nalso the rubber block that bolts between the bottom of the box to the subframe, now this improved slightly but not fixed. coming off and on throttle at low revs you can feel the engine moving about also.

now i have adjusted the mounts as suggested on here, ie the top mount was undone and engine pulled as forward as possible and done bk up, the bracket for the dog bone i have undone and adjusted as per instructions on here, so i have done as much as i can

and the movement and knocking is still here, now i have had people tell me the engine should move around a little, but it is moving too much i think, in fact so much it has now cracked my exhaust at the joint of the middle box to cat

so i know this is not normal, so is there something i have forgotten? can the mounts be adjusted any other way? or do i have to buy uprated mounts? is there a specialist i can take it to? (im in wiltshire, anywhere close?) i just cant see how it can be like this as standard, as im sure other peoples cant be moving and banging enough to crack your exhausts guys?

pls help guys im at me wits end now

thanks

russ

standard exhaust??? i have an aftermarket one and im not quite sure the fit is spot on yet. had all the mounts sorted and still does the noise in first and sometimes second on a bumpy surface. at a loose end myself and running out of options. something must be adjustable......

nope blueflame cat bk mate, but did it with the std one on too

exaclt mate, mine in the wet is really really bad,and the engine movement is still too much i swear

also if you hold my brake on and bring the clutch up to biting point again and again you can feel the engine moving around, like its slightly loose even

there must be something iv missed?

one thing to is check how close the exhaust manifold to the sub frame. they are very close. if so we have had to raise some of them up at work. Ph1s are a bit of a nightmare the rest seem of i had the knock on mine 2 mounts and its all fixed. also check the stud is tight in the gearbox mount

  53 Clio's & counting
done that, stud is tight as far as i can tell, though the mount does look like it moves a bit when grabing the engine to rock it by hand

exhaust is close but doesnt knock as there are no marks on the exhaust or the subframe

il give this a try mate il let you know how i get on

im also going to try a std dog bone mount, has anyone got a std ph1 172 dog bone mount? im happy with it in any condition,i need to try something!

right i cant bloody believe it!!!

i thought i would try to fit the washers under the box mount tonight, but i ran out of time, alli have done it undone the two bolts on the mount, not the main big one, so i tightened them back up, put my battery back on and came over to the house that me and thre other half are house sitting at and the movement is worse and when i accellerate hard in 1st i get a wherring(sp) grinding noise!!! the only thing i can think now is the engine is moving so much a part of it must be sat against something and vibrating like mad,but i cant see how as alli did was undoo those two bolts then do them back up!?

i had knocking in my ph1 172...coming from the front/engine area.
turned out to be the ball joint on the passenger side...yours sounds alot more serious, but i took mine over to bucks renault and they sorted it out a treat...turned out i also had a crack in one of the springs.

highly recommend the garage if you dont mind travelling a few miles

thanks mate the ball joints are spot on, and springs are new

any other ideas guys? i cant see how mw undooing and tightening those bolts could have done anything? :(

Is that what has been done to mine Paul? It has some washers under it. Absolultely spot on mine is

Yes thats right i belive every mount on that car was fiited new by me and that mod was made.

Russ may have moved a bit but i but the exhaust is on the subframe.

so if i have managed to adjust the mounts wrong, when adjusted will engine movement be reduced? as it gives the feeling of shagged mounts atm

Update:

right got it up on a ramp at work and undone all mounts, including the mount that is on the block that the dog bone bolts to,battery out and gearbox mount off

found the stud that runs up through the g/box mount had worked a lil loose so that was tightened up, the dogbone bracket was adjusted as per on here, and i put washers on the g/box mount under the battery to lift that up slightly.

then i took the top one off and put it in the vice to crimp it up slightly

results:

the engine now moves less, which is nice,no more knocking under acceration

but

when loosing grip in the wet/dry it still sends off a bloody knocking noise!

now i know it cant be me as everything is now checked and double checked,my last hope is to fit a std dog bone mount i guess

when you say you loose grip you get a knocking noise, is it more like a bang from one or both of the wheel areas?

also is your car lowered? if so on springs or shocks?

the only reason i ask is that the shocks could be knackered as they will not rebound properly and will bang when you loose grip. without actually being in the car when it does it though makes it very difficult to diagnose it.

still knocks if i launch fairly fast of the line mate and in wet conditions :( alot better dont get me wrong but its still there i dont know what to do

has anyone said top of the struts...? Saw a thread while back saying they sometimes bang against the top of the bonnet under hard acceleration...

  53 Clio's & counting
thank you for helping matey i thought this possibly too but alas the strut tops and bearings are new and still the noise stays

Ahh ok no worries

Have you managed to pin point where abouts the noise is coming from? which side of the car? both? near the wheels etc

  53 Clio's & counting
both sides matey, depending which ay the wheels are turning (even slight turning can cause the noise to change sides)

its coming from the front, and sounds like the engine knocking against something
