Just a quick write up of my last visit! Few pics here http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=96091&id=286602126&l=b801e21525
I went over with a mate in his M coupe on the Friday (29/5) We caught the 10am Norfolkline ferry- mistake no.1 lol. Traffic on the continent was shocking (don't get me started on the Belgian drivers!) and it was a bit of a crap drive down until the last hour or so when we break off and take the scenic route.
Saturday and Sunday were absolutely heaving what with them being tourist days and then German public holiday on the Monday. Having bought an 8 lap ticket Saturday morning and thinking to myself I should have bought more, by Sunday it became apparent that I might struggle to fit these in!
We tried to get out on track many times over the weekend but there was literally an accident every hour and this resulted in the track being closed a lot! Queues were running all the way back into Nurburg pretty much The worst accident occurred whilst we were spectating; a bike manage to clear the armco and they spent a while looking for him in the woods! A heli came down and landed on the track, quite a sight but it kinda sends home the message that doing the ring on a bike is bloody dangerous! I'm not sure he made it because they were taking their sweet time with it all and held up sheets to obscure the view :dead:
We stayed at this place http://www.hotel-wilhelmshoehe.de/ and it was awesome, definitely recommend it! One of the best parts of this trip was stumbling upon Cochem; really nice place and great sweeping curves down to the town. We ate at the place by the T junction called stumbergers or something and the food/service was good.
We got most of our laps in on the Tuesday evening session but even that was cut short because of accidents! Nevertheless, as usual with ring trips there was plenty of automotive p**n to keep us interested! Car of choice this year seemed to be the F430 Scud; I think I counted 5 maybe 6!
Anyways, all in all a pretty good trip despite getting hardly any laps in and seeing a shed load of crashes! Still have love for the Nurburgring but I think its possibly becoming too commercialised and popular :-( I know I probably wont be heading back for a while...it's just so far away! We made a bit of a school boy on the return leg due to an impulse decision to catch a different ferry, long story short it resulted in us having to drive particularly fast for the majority of the journey back! :-/
Oh and the ticketing system has been changed to a crappy plastic card and you can't pay cash in the diner anymore...have to top up a card and use that- pretty annoying tbh! Especially as I have one with 6 euros on and a lap ticket with two remaining lol...if anyone's going this summer and wants my laps fire me a PM.
