The folder that the lass gave me that owned the car before me with all the receipts and stuff it came with, it has all the old tax discs from 2001 in it, my god that makes depressing reading

£270 next year, i can hardly contain my excitement

Is yours after March 2001?

One of the latest ph1 172s then.

I'm looking for a pre March 2001 172 just to save on tax lol

It is my friend, it was registered on the 3rd of March 2001 lol, i tell you if there was no bad luck id have no luck!

Still £270 isnt exactly a drop in the ocean for hot hatch ownership if im being quite honest:eek:

Lol that is unlucky, bet at the time the original owner was happy it would have had a brand new reg on it.

Yeah £270 isn't a lot now, but no idea what it could be in quite a few years and I'm planning on keeping as a track car when I'll probably replace it in a few years time. Plus I'm still at uni so every pound saved means a lot to me lol

According to parkers the ph1 172 pre-March 2001 will be £185 until April 2010 when it will go up to £200.

Compared to ph2 172/ph1 172 registerd after 1st March 2001 that is currently £210, going up to £260 from April 2009 and then £270.

So if you bought a tax today, the next three years would cost you an extra £170 to tax 2 identical cars.

Equivalent to nearly 943 miles of driving at an average of 30mpg with petrol at 119p a litre. Or 1100 miles for those with a steadier right foot achieving an average of 35mpg. That's like 20-25% of my total petrol cost for one year.

Quite shocking really for a clio

Indeed, esp compared to an post - sept 07 330i Coupe paying just £170, £205 and £210 for this year and the next 2.

I know that's some 7 years newer than the 172 engine design, but the 197 is still in the same tax bands as the 172.

That said, BMW is top of emission reducing for petrol engines I believe, actually reduced more than the average rate for all car manufactures' target for the new manufacturers emission reducing legislation thing by the EU.

Dont get me wrong i'm not happy with these increases in every thing but my mate made a good point.. now you pay £100+ for 1 track day or you pay £270 for 365 days...

*** I dont not suggest/recomend that you drive on the UK roads like you would on the track ***

Also quite bad that my friend is going to be paying something like £185 for his 330 bhp escort cosworth

Yeah I agree James, but Tax is something you have to pay, whether you drive 1 mile a month or 5000. Trackday is a choice but it is a valid point and in comparison road tax is cheap.

It's difficult to tax people without taking into consideration how much they drive as well as what they drive. Road tax can't do that, but fuel duty can, ie. more you drive, more petrol you use or more uneconomically you drive, more petrol you use in but both means paying more tax in terms of fuel duty. Yet you can't use fuel duty alone as fuel prices are already making some families convert from a 2 car household to a 1 car household.

With regards to taxing cars post 2001 is a disgrace. How can you be taxed more on something you bought (if new) 7 years ago? What a joke! Should only apply to new cars IMO.

My plan is to get 6 months at the end of August. Then 12 months in Feb before it increases.

This is what I have done, get the cheaper tax before the increase in April,

I'm surprised allot of people have not already done this

If you were to keep your car for the next 2 years and 9 months, for example, it would cost you £115 + £210 + £260 + £270 = £855 (assuming you bought a years tax each year every Feb and didn't apply for a tax refund when selling up).

If you just got 12 months tax every year from end of August, it would be £210 + £260 + £270 = £740.

Or if you knew you'd be selling in 2 years 9 months and selling with the remaing tax, it'd be £115 + £210 + £260 + £148 (6m tax in feb 2011) = £733.

Or, if you plan to sell in 2 years and 5 months, it'd be £115 + £210 + £260 = £585.

So unless you plan on selling your car within 2 and a half years of end of Aug, i'd just get 12 months tax TBH.

Yes I am that bored, and still quite tired, so sorry if any mistakes in my calculations lol

I have no idea how long i'm gonna keep my car for, so getting the 6 months then buying 12 saves me about £30?

It's hard to say mate, if you plan to sell in a years time, then 12 months tax now would make sense, only £210.

If you buy 6 months now/soon, then 12 months before 13th April 2009, it'll be £325 total for 18 months compared to £470 for 2 full years tax.

Unless you have a rough time you definitely plan to sell, either way could be more expensive.

Maybe I should make a chart for everyone lol
