Rob's Iceberg Project

Hi guys thought I'd put together a project thread for my Clio.

This is my second phase two 172 my first being a Monaco with pink wheels... People may remember that little beauty (I think the project thread is still on here haha)

I bought this standard car at the beginning of the year with pretty low mileage 72k at what I thought was a good price She's not perfect by no means the body work has the odd ding. I think the previous owner used the bumper as parking sensors! It only had a couple of months left on both its tax and MOT but I thought it was worth the risk...

Unfortunately the MOT pulled up quite a few issues and I ended up replacing the front and rear discs and pads aswel as the front and rear bearings and new tyres the bushes were also worn and so I decided to replace the wishbone, ARB, and the lower dogbone mount bush all with Powerflex items.

After that I continued with the handling upgrades and went for Koni dampers with Eibach Proline springs and KTR solid top mounts. aswel as H&R spacers (10mm front and rear) These with the poly bushes really are a great mod and the car drives really well and is not harsh at all.

The car has also had a K&N panel filter and a KTR sports stealth exhaust system fitted which I am looking to change as to my taste its far too quiet especially with the cat still there!

Most recently I replaced the engine mounts with the uprated KTR mounts as the engine was knocking and the the original mounts had long gone! I've also replaced the brake lines with Goodridge "phantom" lines along with ATE super blue brake fluid.

I've got plenty of plans for the old girl and I'd really like to do some track work next year. But i do want to keep her full weight and try and have a happy medium, as for the time being its my daily drive and I've owned stripped out cars before and for day to day it drives me mental!

I think that would look pretty smart.. Are there any on the net you could use as a ref?

If I'm honest bud, I haven't had a look. I've seen a couple of cars that are matte grey and they look fantastic! As much as I would love a full respray. There's many more things I want to get done before that. So all those dents and scratches can wait! ;)

In a dream world and if I could get the money together I'd like to put a supercharger on the old girl! ;) but there's a few things happening before that! Next weekend I'm taking off the ktr stealth system (which I will sell) and replacing it with a full recessed system with a de-cat!

E90 M3!? That's a fair wedge!

The ktr stealth is a good system, but for me it's far to quiet. Saying that though my clio still has the cat and the system is the sports version with the extra silencer. It's louder than standard and really well built, just too tame for me!

Yeah.. Im swinging between either a E90 M3 or a golf R... but im more towards the E90 atm.. it may change altogether! Haha.
So would you say the Supersports Stealth (without the middle silencer) is the one to go for.? Just most bits of info i can find on here is controversial..

When it comes down to what noise a car makes, it really is down to personal opinion mate! The sports stealth system is louder than standard but it's still quiet IMO. Like I said though, I still have the cat fitted. So if you went for a super sports system (especially if you also have a cat) I think that would be a better choice!

Got my new exhaust fitted on Friday, by a good mate of mine that makes exhaust systems and other fabrication etc.
My previous exhaust was a ktec stealth sports one, although they're made really well. For me it was far too quiet!
So Matt has made a full stainless steel system 2.5inch from the manifold all the way back to rear box. (No centre silencer)

The verdict...

It's bloody loud! And it's early days yet, but I'm undecided to wether it's too loud! Saying that though I've been told if it makes me deaf I can have a centre silencer put in.

Take a look and see what you think.

Well after only a week of the new exhaust, the droning and the constant metallic rasp did drive me mad! Some people may like it, and fair play if you do but for me it was far too Asbo IMO!

So I've had a centre silencer put in, and it's so much better. Don't get me wrong it's still a loud system, but you don't get as much droning, and it's made the exhaust note much deeper and it's lost that raspiness!

There's been quite a bit of talk of exhaust's on the forum recently, and as far as I'm concerned I think the best way to go is a de-cat but fit a centre silencer too!

Here's a pic of my engine bay with the K&N Typhoon kit fitted! I'm really chuffed with it.

Gave the car a good clean today, and I'm really looking forward to the new year with plenty more bits to do!

Next on the list:

New wheels possibly anthracite turini's

A cup spoiler

A remap. To even out the power band

On top of that I need to replace the bushes on my steering rack. And at the same time replace both the tie rods and the track rod ends.

Fairly sure I saw you turning up towards the Chineham Arms as I was leaving the Business Park in Chineham this evening.

Couldn't see much but I noticed yellow fogs!

Yeah I saw you too mate! It was bloody dark, and by the time I noticed it was too late for a wave!

I live just down Renown Way which is basically just opposite the Chineham Arms.

Update!

After Dr Jekyll recommended these beauty's http://bit.ly/UUM9e0 I fitted them this afternoon and I'm really chuffed! So cheers mate.

Unlike a lot of sidelight bulbs that are covered in loads of LED's which IMO just looks a bit odd, these almost look like a mini xenon optic!

Not a great photo but you can see how well they match with the xenon bulb!

At the wknd I also picked up a cup front splitter and a cup rear spoiler (which is being painted this week) once that's done and they are both fitted I will get some new photos up! I just need to decide on some wheels now. Either OZ super's or Speedline Turni's?

Lastly... Tomorrow I'm refreshing the steering with new tie rods, track rod ends, steering boots, and powerflex rack bushes.

Update!

Both cup spoilers are now fitted and the rear one was sprayed by one of my customers. Not 100% on the colour match but in the right light it looks perfect. Must be one of those colours I guess? Either way I'm really happy with them both. It's funny what two bits if plastic can do!

I've also replaced both tie rods and track rod ends, as well as new steering rack boots and powerflex rack bushes. And then had the tracking done. The car drives so much nicer! Haven't noticed any difference with the bushes but they were a lot firmer than the old rubber units.

And just this morning I did a coolant change. Along with a new expansion tank and cap as the old one was so grubby! I also replaced thermostat with a new one while I was at it.

The silicone hose that comes with the typhoon kit IMO is too short and rubs against the throttle body, so that's been exchanged for a 90 degree elbow from SFS.

Next to come is a set of the obligatory turini's in anthracite or maybe some 2118's if I can source any? and of course some sticky rubber!
