Rough running after Belt change

  F4R 1.2 Extreme
Hello,

want to to start by saying a couple things, firstly I'm not a troll but after a long story I lost my login details for old account, secondly I am aware that there a many posts about this.

Anyway... Now onto the issue in hand!

A few months ago I purchased a second hand 172 Ph 2 lump with apparent dephaser fault, I purchased a brand new dephaser unit and cambelt kit from Renault, I took it to my local garage to carry out the works, ( yes I am aware that specialist tools are required ) but after having good reviews from various local people that had gone to him for cambelt/ dephaser changes on 1*2's I decided to go with him.

I put the engine back into the car and started it up, it has this horrendous TOP end knock and it is 100% not dephaser knock, it does it on cold aswell as hot, and no better/worse on either, it has a sort of "rhythm" to the knock, a video would be preferd and I will get round to it but to try describe it in words would be something like very very faint and then a few very quick "knocks", could this be a result of not having it timed correctly? Or is it something more severe inside? I must add that I didn't hear the engine running on the donar car, and I should add that I have had the car running on rs tuner diagnostics for probably an hour with the severity or pattern of the knocks not getting any worse/better which I would guess put the tappets being dry out of the question?

Any by ideas would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like the timing is out take it to a specialist and get it checked and reset sounds like valves clipping the piston tops

Thanks for the reply,

that is what it sounds like something like that, probably not safe to keep it running?

Take the cam bungs out, turn it to TDC, see if they look about straight, Im guessing they will look more like a bit of a VW logo.

Chip - how do I turn to TDC?

Reedy - Yes they definitely changed the pulley, I am totally aware of the usual dephaser characteristics and this sounds a lot more serious!

Dan - At a guess I would say somewhere in the region of 4-6 months dry aswell! ( no oil )

Thanks for the replies!

You can get TDC in a close enough ballpark to see if cams are very wrong by sticking a McDonald's straw down cylinder 1 sparkplug hole.
