Please help me somebody! :dapprove: I bought a wireless modem/router just after christmas. After the initial nightmare of setting the thing up :)mad: ) all had been working hunky dory for ~2 months. Last week tho it went down, every time I tried to sign onto the internet on this (the host) pc it comes up with "DNS server unavailable or unreachable" :S I have tried everything suggested by my ISP and still get the error everytime. I am currently online using my standard ADSL modem but am unable to use the pc which is upstairs (wireless) Can someone please shed some light on the issue as I've drawn a complete blank! :dapprove: :S

Cheers peeps :rasp:

  Not a Clio
might help if you list what you've been through with the ISP?

I imagine they will have covered just about everything(?)

Well basically deleted cookies, offline content, cleared cache etc... Rebuilt the adaptor, reset security settings. Scanned for spyware and viruses, both came back with nothing... erm... i've done a system restore and still get the same problem. I have checked and rechecked everything and am really at my wits end!

Are you using static or dhcp assigned IP addresses for the pc's?
More than likely dhcp assigned, but if its static, you need to make sure you have your router ip address set as your dns server in your network connection settings (probably 192.168.0.1)

If dhcp assigned, it will be something to do with the settings in the router itself.

Probably been checked but, go into your router set up page, look for anything to do with dns settings, this should be set to automatic from ISP

  SLK 350
Router will be DHCP enabled, and you'd know if it wasn't as you'd need to delegate IP's manually.

Goto start-->run-->cmd.exe

Type - ipconfig /all

Paste in the information within that so we can see how your TCP/IP is defined. You may also want to try the following to force the router to issue a new IP:

ipconfig /release
then do:
ipconfig /renew

Can you also give details of why you can't gain access to your router admin pages, and also detail the exact router model.

Maybe worth checking the manufacturers website in order to download newer firmware which may help default your router and get it working again - but unless you get access to the admin pages i doubt you'll be able to update it.

More details please...

As for the router admin pages it keeps asking for a username and password, but I never opted for one when I set it up. I have tried every possible username/password combination that I would use and it fails every time.
The router is SpeedTouch 580i wireless with ADSL modem.
cheers for the help so far mate.

Hi there,

Right, well i use the speedtouch 510 v4 router, so id suggest the following:

Username - Administrator
Password - Administrator

See if that works for logging onto the admin page. You may also want to edit your IP details now mate but that all seems in order.

Let me know how you get on with that.

the -Administrator idea didn't work mate, it still comes back to the password/Username screen :dapprove:

  SLK 350
The SpeedTouch™ comes with a default user; its user name is ‘Administrator’ and
the default password is blank.

Thats from the 580i manual mate.

oh how i wish this would work...but still no luck with the password/username mate. i really can't understand it! :S

  SLK 350
http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/downloads/580/4329UK/ST580UPG4329UK.zip

Download that and see if you can update it without password access. Did you try the default username without adding a password in there too. I know they do default to Admin... because i updated my 510 to latest firmware (the one i linked to) just last week.

Failing that mate tt the back of the ST 580 you find a small hole between the power inlet and the 4 LAN connections. You can reset the ST 580 (with power on!) by depressing with a paperclip the reset switch in the hole for about 7 seconds. Resetting will bring you back to the settings with which the ST 580 left the factory.

Hope thats a little more helpful, just make sure you update to latest firmware after you reset it, its a much more user friendly affair than prior versions.

cheers for all your help mate, I have already downloaded that firware you linked to but it still needs the password etc. I did type 'Administrator' without entering the password but no joy. I will give the reset option a try, but then bed time for me, need :sleepy:

EDIT... the reset worked! woohooo! :approve: I'm in, lol! Cheers mate you're a :star: I'll delv deeper tomorrow after work.
