RS Monaco Clio surprise (Renault Clio R.S.16)

Whatever they do with it it's not going to be as special as the v6. The v6 is so mechanically different to normal Clio's the price was easily justified. Some flared arches and an older engine than what's in now don't justify such a price hike IMO.

Can't compare the Vee to a FWD hatch. The Vee was a massive departure, totally different chassis, drive train (including orientation!), body etc.

Funny you mention the orientation.

I was scratching my head for a while trying to piece together a vee exhaust the other day before I realised the engine was longitudinally mounted (that is the one where the cylinders face forwards and back rather than side to side right?)

Pretty sure the vee engine is transversely mounted (same as an fwd car)

Anyway... if this is priced in the £20k's then i'd be very tempted.

If not hopefully is paves the way for a manual clio 220

I'm loving this! Hopefully it's a limited world wide release. Someone on this thread said it might become as sought after as the epic v6. With the specs they've suggested it would be one of a kind. I'd definitely be interested.

Where the intake and exhaust ports face front and back is called transversally mounted. This is how most FWD cars have their engines.

Longitudinally mounted is where they face left and right (most RWD cars)

Wasn't the v6 £28ish grand when new?

I bet people at the time said similar things to you.

When the V6 came out it didn't have any competition or comparable cars.
With the exception of the limited run Focus RS the only other decent hot hatch around was another Clio.

In todays market the hot hatch segment has exploded, the bar has been set very high and the prices surprisingly low.

Have they said they will actually sell some, or is it just a promotional thing?

It would be cool, a massive improvement over the base car, but I can see it being an expensive machine if they are only making a handful of them. Fitting the 2.0 turbo engine, manual box and new body work is going to mean an awful lot of work like new crash tests etc. If they only make 500-1000, they would need to charge silly money to get any of their costs back, unless they are willing to sell them at a huge loss just for the marketing kudos.

I shall reserve judgement for now.

If it was just a promo thing it would be like the twin run or espace f1. This will be on sale for sure, just at what price? If it comes with 275bhp is going to be a class above everything in its segment, but woukd yiu really want it over a focus rs, type r or golf r for same money?

I'm not sure tbh. Clio is a lot more discreet than any of those- not to mention lighter... If they genuinely sell a Clio with a 2.0T 275hp it'll be the fastest Clio ever and probably be a limited run £35k. And if it comes with Recaros/Brembos/Akra etc they all add their individual brand taxes so I wouldn't be surprised if the number started with a 3 or a 4 sadly.

There's no way this will be more than £25k-£26k, the 220 Trophy is 22 with recaros. Essentially you adding a manual gearbox (usually a cheaper option) and an engine which has already been developed. The new focus RS is £30k and that's 350bhp with 4 wheel drive. So unless they make major chassis changes or make it 4 wheel drive this won't be that much more pricey than the Trophy.

However if its got the 275 engine then it would be faster than the civic round the ring? Would be nice to have a Clio listed as the fastest front wheel drive car round the ring.

Surely the pricing depends on the size of production run?

Isn't this a bit similar to the Audi A1 Quattro / Audi S1?

Both very similar cars, but the Quattro was a real bespoke low numbers run and cost a fortune. The S1 is basically the same hardware but packaged for an unlimited production run and is massively cheaper.

Looks nice, probably will go well enough, regardless of price they will clearly sell the lot in no time...but I am so un-moved by this. I get not even the slightest twitch downstairs.

Too little, too late. It's taken them three years to find their balls while the entire market has moved on.

I wonder what their justification for this having a manual 'box will be? Too many torques? It's what the keen driver wants?

Going by the statement posted earlier maybe a toned down higher volume version will follow? They could offer all the goodies separately like with the Megane.

It isn't the engine development that's the problem. I'm sure fitting and wiring up the engine was easy, it's all the regulatory stuff that comes with it. If it's the only Clio with that engine, they'll have to crash test it I should think. The wider body work and spoiler will have to go through type approval etc. If they get bogged down in a lot of regulation box-ticking and only want to make a few, then it could become a very expensive car, unless they are willing to sell at a loss.

I might be wrong, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they don't stick the body mods onto a 220 Trophy, up the power a bit, stick a manual box in and call it a Trophy R that was "inspired" by this creation. Or, if they make this, it could be a ludicrously expensive, short-run special. Or, they could surprise us all and make thousands of them at sub-£25k. Or it could just be a show piece that never gets sold. Who knows, but I wouldn't be getting too excited just yet.

It's taken them years and they still can't produce a decent semi-auto??
The one in the 220 Trophy is alrite, the one in the 200T is a turd and in both cases the vast majority of people would prefer a manual.

Some of the comments across various forums and facebook are funny. All slagging the 200/220 off yet half of them haven't even driven one but with this one possibly being released they are all saying they would buy one. No chance, less than 10% will actually put their money where their mouth is and buy one if its even possible to buy one.

Agreed, if they make a limited run and they are mega money, they'll all sell, but a lot of people seem to be thinking this is going to be a proper production car for reasonable money. I remain sceptical about that, but we shall see.

If we use the megane as a template, the 250, 265 and 275 have all been updated production models based on the same megane, there no reason they couldn't apply this logic to the clio? I suppose much like the 172 into the 182.
