RS Turbo-a-no-go

On my home this morning and came up behind a Escort RS Turbo, K plate, followed it for a couple of miles stuck behing a articulated, they obviously realsied i was behind them and the passanger gave me some unpleasent hand gestures (obviously realising who had the better car), came to a good straight with nothing coming the other way so i dropped it a couple of cogs and went round it and the truck, it pulled out behing me and went round the truck, just as it pulled in front of the truck, bang, turbo smoke everywhere! Thing is i wernt giving mine anystick, doing about 55-60 coz the traffic my way was heavy. Nuff said!

It was badged a turbo, rst bonnet and a Severn Valley Motorsport badge so think it had a transplant, there only down the road from me. Presumed it was his turbo blown, just a big plumb of black smoke behind him and he pulled it over...

Sounds like he his boost cut. It just cuts the engine if the boost gets too high. Blowing the turbo will not make any noise at all.

probally some bodge job conversion where they jusy put a manifold and turbo on, then are meant to run low boost. the MFIs are easily tubod for low boost, high comp engines

When mines fixed I will have to be the imposter at the group meetings!

Dont hold your breath though - its been sitting in the garage for about 2 and a half years...

Bazz - checked out this one for you mate. Yep, turbo conversion car. Turns out what you heard was a piston melting at full boost. when a turbo hits its boost limit, it just feels like theyve instantly taken the turbo away and youre NASP. On my GSi T once i hit 14.7 psi (1bar) it feels as if im driving my old mini again (but at 150 mph ;) )

The bloke is a regular at seven vally supposedly. lots of work done. Oh well. Its a Ford :D

Black smoke wont be a turbo goin, white or blue would be though ! Was behind a uno turbo once when it let go, took me a week to get oil off my windscreen !

lol. too right. my mate blew a turbo seal on his coupe turbo infront of my. As Jonto says, it takes a while to get it off. Gave me a good excuse to get it valeted :D

As any of us would im sure! lol Not nice when your turbo does give up though. I had over 1.5 litres of oil in my Interccoler when mine went, and oil had been pushed up through all the boost hoses and out the carb all over the bonnet and bulk head! NICE lol
