Running on 3 cylinders

  impreza
HI there,

I am having a few issues with my car the the moment, the other day my alternator litterally just gave up the ghost without any prior warning except for a battery light that gave me about 5 mins of driving before all was dead.

This isnt my current problem as that is now fixed but wasnt sure if it may have something to do with my issue now.

I was driving to work this morning, everything was fine, stopped at a red light and when i went to pull away suddenly my car was running on 3 and sounding like a flat 6 boxer engine. I have no dash warning lights and my plugs were changes about 3k ago. Where do i start and what do you think the prob could be?

I didnt drive it after that, just limped it to friends house and as far as i can tell the mis was all the way up the revs.

Any help would be greatfully received.

Could be an injector

Get diagnostics for like 30 quid at a specialist

As it could be a number of things

Whilst you're there checking plug leads check the plug wells to see if there's any sign of water or oil ingress as this can cause missfiring issues to.

The OP speaks the truth! When my car came back from a garage recently they decided to wash my car and jet wash my engine bay while they were at it. Shortly after when driving the car it started to run on three cylinders, misfire and overfuel, which really does make the car sound like it has a boxer engine! very similar to my friends subaru with which he agreed, apart from the fact it runs like an absolute dog and is undriveable. After buying a new coilpack, nothing changed. I then (which i wish i did before investing in a new coil pack) took all my sparks out and inspected them, which revealed water droplets all over the plug in cylinder 3. Sprayed it with wd40 and wiped it down problem sorted for me, hope it works for you.

Hi mate. I had the exact same problem as you in my 182 not so long ago. As it turned out, my alternator gave up. I changed that. A few days later it was missing. Changed plugs and leads and the problem was still there. Got a new coil pack. It was still doing it. So I checked the injectors. Let the car run on idel, lift the bonnet and with the fuel Rail cover removed, unplug each injector one by one. If you hear the engine drop in Revs or stall, it's not that one. If you hear no change when you pull one, that's the one giving the issue. I had to buy a set of four injectors and only needed one so I have 4 speare. If you need one give me a shout!

As said, check the state of your plugs first to be sure.

i had what sounds like a similar problem with my old 106 gti and that turned out to be a coilpack issue, new one and it was sorted, although deffo check the water issues before investing in anything !
