Sachs Rear Dampers

  Clio 200 Black and White
I have a trophy on coilovers at the moment and I'm keen to swap back to the sachs dampers.

I have the fronts luckily, but need a pair of rears - does anyone have some for sale or can someone give the new price from Renault?

Pretty sure but im prob wrong here that its standard 182 suspension on the back of the trophy?

There's a guy on cliotrophy that has taken his sachs rear dampers off to replace them with koni adjustables. Maybe he'll sell his??

I bought the car with the coilies on, the previous owner had used it for hillclimbs and slaloms and got bored of the superfluous body roll of the standard set up, especially when using slicks.

I heard these things are 600 quid for the pair, that can't be right can it?

Mate theres alot of talk about the trophy dampers costing loads, the fronts are expensive but the rears are just over a £100 each.

I know this for a fact as I had mine replaced under warranty and looked at the work invoice.

They are a serious bit of kit. Moral of the story, don't loose them

Thanks for input folks.

Superfluous as in "unnecessary" and "needless". Since slick tyres require less body roll for the development of grip, the excess body roll afforded by the Sachs set up becomes "superfluous".

T5PHY - I assume you have tried your Trophy with slicks on a swiss hill climb event and have carefully compared the results with a the use of high quality coilovers?

Yes.

Forgive me but i fail to see the poin in buying probably the best handling stock hothatch ever then changing the best thing about it to go hill climb. Why not just buy a 182 and save the money?

Again i mean no offence to you - i think i saw the pics you posted and it looks great.

You're right, it would've made more sense start off with a 172 cup (especially since he also dis-engaged the ABS)

Basically he bought it brand new, drove it on the road for 3 years and then fancied doing a bit of racing so stuck the cage in and invested in some coilovers (to lower the ride height, reduce roll and permit a bit of adjustability).

Have you really compared your car with a clio on coilovers? Would be interested to hear what you thought.

Yes indeedy - Driven 2 172's on coilys. Trophy is far superior IMO. Coilys tend to crash about a bit more. The Sachs setup is much more progressive and controlable when changing direction quickly. They were both too low IMO. I was more impressed with one on ebach prolines.

The sachs have hydraulic bump stops, hence the reason why they are much more progressive and don't 'crash' on the limit.

now i know this is a forum, and i shouldn't even bother saying this...but..... FFS

why are you getting wound up about someones opinion on what suspension is best for their needs? just because you think that god himself hand made your sachs dampers and that replacing them is a sin and punishable by death, does not mean someone else doesn't think they are poo.

'what if' the guy has replaced them with cup racer dampers, or some other superior damper, which is perfect for his hillclimbing needs? i fail to see the point in you even having a rant just because someone has changed the dampers on their own bloody car, heaven forbid!

maybe someone told him the trophy was the best handling stock hot hatch and thats why he bought one, and to his dissapointment it didn't handle as well as he thought on a hillclimb, so the obvious answer was to change the suspension.

not having a go btw, just an observation :rasp:

god did make my suspension....

I'm not saying the trophy is the ultimate handling car, obviously the 172 cup is the best. ;) all I'm trying to say tyat the money spent on new suspension on a trophy could have been spent more wisely. but as he bought the car on coilys my argument is laregly irrelivent anyway.

I've owned a Trophy, and a Clio on coilovers (AST's). The Trophy is the better road car, one of the better road cars I've ever driven. But the coilovers are better for track, no argument. In a perfect world I'd have one of both.
