Sadev Gearbox ?

I’ve been thinking should I buy a new car like a fast BM or Audi and the thought of mega road tax and mega depreciation is putting me off.

So been thinking why not spend half that and get ITB and Sadev gearbox.

But can anyone who has used or has a Sadev give me any information on cost, reliability, rebuild intervals, what other than the gear box would I need and how best to get the things required.

I’m looking at doing this around this time next year but need some totals to aim at.

P.S Car will be used on road with lots of tarmac/gravel rallies
and a oil burner for poottalin rownd

Do a search there have been loads of topics on them.

IIRC, they're really not ideal for road driving AT ALL.

need rebuilding every few k miles , depending how hard you use them , waste of cash for road use , and only ideal for track use if you are going to compete !!! lot of money for a gearbox

It would be horrendous in traffic or when you're not flat out. Anoything under 3.5-4k and the gearchange is clunky, it kangaroo's and will do your head in. That said, get above 4k and they're amazing.

plus a REAL 240bhp NA clio can lap quicker than a cup racer of the same era but with only a stock gearbox ;)

If it's strength your worried about you could have an OEM box rebuilt and have the gears cryo treated - Although i've no experience of how sucessful this is.

dog gears inserted into normal box ???

be warned if you select a wrong gear it will go in and not crunch, ie @ 60mph if you select 1st your engine will throw conrods out, FACT

Sounds like the Sadev is a wast then. I want strength and good usability, are there any other options?? Also drive safts, are there stronger shafts I could get?

Ive used a dog box in a mk2 escort, I thought it was similar to a normal box exept the wiiiiiiiiiinnnee noise it makes.

Standard driveshafts seem to be doing just fine for me. Been on for 7,000 miles and haven't given up. Admittedly I haven't been out on a proper track day in it yet but it's still given death quite regularly. Plus the car isn't much lower than standard which may help?

by all means get a seq box if your running over 220 brake and needing fast reliable shift times, if you just dicking about at a track day its not worth the hassle

If you have money to waste then id go for it especially over ITB's. But as with all things expensive and competition related to be able to afford it you need to have enough money to maintain it.

They are easy to use not clunky or crunchy like people have said. Being semi helical and not straight cut means there not overly noisy which is a bonus.

But there are down sides, the constant gear changing will do your head in on the road. If you have to stop in a high gear you might find it a pain to get down to first gear, your normally have to faff around with the clutch to get it to go back down the box when stationary. The £40 per 1000 "road" miles to change the oil will get quite tiresome on the pocket. When it does come round to you needing a rebuild it can sometimes be costly.

If i had money to waste id buy a 172 cup and get another sadev box and run it on the road. Being so similar to my rally car would enable me to be able to get straight on it rather than having to build up giving me the edge over my competitors. But I live on a 9x5 mile island means journeys are never really longer than 20 minutes so the impracticalitys arent a big problem for me. Unfortunately one box is expensive enough to run, so for now that is but a dream.

So basically if you dont want/cant afford to spend the money to run one then its not for you.

Thanks for the info, it just a shame there isnt a standard box thats really good like some of the Jap boxs.
