sanding down 182 bumper...

  clio 5door sport rep
Hey
Guys... in process if sanding down bumper...

using 40 grit sandpaper got higher grades aswell as some 1200 wet and dry for afters

My question is when do I know I've sanded enough and ready to start priming?

cheers

40 grit! Jesus wept!

If it's not damaged you shouldn't have to sand it with anything lower than 800 wet n dry.

Few damaged bits that will need repaired using filler which is next....

Lol so can I assume I'm good
To prime then if I've used to low a grade lol... will I give it a wet 1200 before primering? Surely using a low grade paper won't matter once I've primered and wet Andes that down ??? I need to respray the whole bumper so it's not just one bit I'm doing it's the whole bumper so I need to take all the previous colour off...

If you've used a 40 grit on it, you're going to have to do a fair bit of sanding through the grades to get rid of the scratches it leaves before priming, a wet 1200 won't even touch it. You'll most probably need to go 80, 180, 400, then wet flat it with 800 before giving it a fair few coats of primer.

You don't have to take all the old paint off either, as I said all it needs is a good sanding till it's all dull with a wet 800 and you'll be able to paint over it. You'd honestly be better off leaving it to professionals mate, it's never going to look as good as a bodyshop doing it.

This - I done my front bumper a couple of weeks ago to cover up damage from when i had a bump, only temporary but you can seriously tell it wasn't done professional and I didn't really take care with it. It looks better than what it did though but as I said its only temporary £20 fix until I can take it to the body shop.

spot on!
as you can tell by my name i run a bodyshop!
trow away your 80 grit and take it to a bodyshop! its prob going to cost more to put right what youve done wrong but atleast you will have a pro job and the colour will match!!!
the moral to this tread is;
if you dont know what your doing, leave it a bloody lone and get someone who has got a cl:)ue!!!!

Your best starting with 180 then working you way up to 500/600 then priming it, arosol primer with show 40 grit marks. Once primed sand the primed area with 800/1000 then give it some paint and laquer.
but must warn you, its going to look poo best sending it to a bodyshop, for a really good job.
