Sat Nav in Halfords

Went into Halfords today armed with a £25 xmas gift voucher, whilst avoiding the neon washer jet aisle I stumbled across the Sat Nav section and the salesman was more than happy to talk me through his wares. I very nearly almost bought a navman 510 reduced from £500 to £400, anybody got any experience of these?

Is ebay worth a look?

Oh I know I will have to put the extra toward it;)

Rip off! Tomtom Go is cheaper and better if your after all in 1 unit, PDA/sat nav cheaper still, mobile phone sat nav even cheaper, depends what you want

do you actually need it ?

are you a delivery / taxi driver ?

id definitely look on Ebay, bargains everywhere !

I have Smart Nav built into my Seat, it basically rings a call centre, which you then tell them where you want to go, and it then sends directions to you car. Mine is free for a couple more months as the dealer installed it. Ive used it once! Its good, but almost all the places i go to i know how to get there. I can see it being useful, and when the subscription runs out ill sign up to it for pay as you go, which is 89p a trip. Its handy because it checks all the latest traffic info on the route your going along, and will divert you if there are major hold ups.
As Brun has said, do you actually need it? I doubt ill use mine more than once or twice a year, and i didnt pay for mine. I wouldnt spend £400 on something youll rarely use.
But if you do do a lot of trips where you dont know the route it will be invaluable.

the navman is a very good unit and looks very nice too, i was close to buying 1 but went with a ipaq instead simply for using it for work etc, if i just wanted it for sat nav i would go for the 510, the software is very good and more upto date maps than tom tom.

Yes guys I do need it I cover 30-35k miles a year, always to new places and I am pissed off with the stress of getting lost! Mobile phone nAv is out as I already have a car phone installed

Im after a rechargeable unit as I dont want any more wires, what with my phone, road angel and soon to be nav, my dashboard will soon start to look like a c**k pit!

Halfords do have acheaper £350 PDA with word/excel as well but maps wernt quite as good!

How much is Tom Tom guys?

Get yourself an IPaq with Tomtom, through taking your time to source all the bits you can do it at a reasonable price.

Youll need:

IPaq, £160+
TomTom 3, £100
GPS Receiver, vary according to whether you want a bluetooth receiver, or a wired receiver. Alternatively I use my Road Angel as the GPS device.
Memory Card for maps, 512mb (Around £30)
And a craddle for the car to hold the IPaq. £15 +

the other pda halfords sell is still a navman unit and uses the same maps as the 510 as far as i know, tom tom is good as u can get loads of stuff for it like overlays etc very easy, and also use lots of diff software on it, but if u dont really want clutter then i would say an all in 1 is better, as with a ipaq and tom tom u need a charger for it unless u wanna use the battery but then u have 3-4 hour batt time, also if u go for a wired gps reciever u got that wire, or if u go bluetooth then u have the charger for that though u can run it off a battery.

in pc world they have a ipaq 1710 with tom tom kit for 249 i think it is, but the pda isnt the best pda in the world and the tomtom software is a cut down version of the standard tom tom 3, i really did like the navman 510, it is a very neat and tidy unit and looks cool, but it was expensive and i could of got a m8 that works there to get staff discount lol my ipaq and tomtom settup is about 350 quid alltogether but i can use it to store photos on for work etc...

Cheers Jon, still about £300 quid though, how did you manage to link it to your road angel?

I am looking for a wire free system, is the above uncluttered?

Cheers

most ipaqs around 160 are gonna be cheaper models or last year models, i got a 2210 for 190 which is quiete a good price its a 400mhz cpu in it and i got a 1 gig mem card too it will run tom tom, and several other programs at the same time...

if u get 1 and connect it to road angel u will need a wire from the pda to the road angel, for the price if ur just after sat nav, get the navman, if u want a pda with sat nav on it so u can store work or films or games etc on it then get a ipaq but unless u got for a bluetooth kit which for a tom tom kit with bt reciever is aroun 160+ u still gonna need a charger for the pda at some point and u will have to take the bluetooth unit in every night to charge it....

I am leaning towards the 510, out october 04 but a lot of peeps on this site favour a pda with tom tom go software (is this right?) which is cheaper and best?

Cheers and is it worth a trip to PC world?

This website has very good reviews of Navman and TomTom products, looking at it makes me well tempted by TomTom mobile as i have a 6600. The phone would be outdated before the software though. Only 299 Euros

tom tom and tom tom go are diff things, tom tom go is a all in 1 unit, looks like a mini tv, i personally dont like it if i was gonna get all in 1 then i would go for the navman, as u can just about slip it in your pocket, if u put a tomtom go in ya pocket people would think u had some massive lump on ya leg lol.

as software on a ipaq tomtom is very good, i would be tempted to look at copilot 5 though as that is very nice and i think slightly better than tomtom.

i personnally would say from reading ya posts say that the navman is the best choise, has better maps and looks sexy too :D

Thanks for your help MaLicE, just wanted someone to confirm that i am making the right choice lol!

I got the 400Mhz, Bluetooth 2210 IPaq from ebay for £160.

It was brand new ;)

Mine is a wired system, but Ive managed to hide all but 1 wire so it looks pretty neat.

What mounting kit is that and how did you fix it to the car. Looks like exactly what ive been searching for. Did you manage to hide the gps wire, if so did you remove your dash.

I bought it, looks pretty cool but voice commands could be a lil quicker coming!

Ill whack a piccy up when I can be arsed!

The GPS wire is the only one you can see, the rest are all hidden. When I move to a Bluetooth GPS receiver theyll all be gone anyway.

It is a Brodit mount, quite expensive, but requires no cutting of the dash, no drilling of holes. Its great.
