Hi All,
I have a 02 Clio 172 that until recently has been running perfectly apart from a noise appearing in recent weeks when the clutch is depressed (i believe it is the clutch release bearing as there is no slipping etc). This noise has only been apparent for about two week and i was about to put the car in to get the clutch replaced. Mileage is 97K.
Yesterday i started the car up as normal and as i pulled off i heard what can only be described as a load pop/bang from the engine bay. I continued for a few hundred yards up the road where i had a continual knocking/clunking noise whilst driving in gear (stopped when clutch depressed) and the engine/exhaust noise seemed to be about 2-3 times louder and a lot deeper in tone. The car had lost pretty much all of its power and appears to be limited to 3K RPM (safe/limp mode??). There were no lights up on the dash and i couldnt see anything hanging down from the car as i initially thought the exhaust had come off (it is possibly the orgianl and blowing/corroded in places.
Does anyone have any ideas what this can be? The fluids are all present and correct, the car does not make this noise when idling and not in gear.
Unfortunately i live on a pretty steep hill so getting access to the underside of the car to just poke around is almost impossible and looking from the top down is just as awkward!
Help would be greatly appreciated as i have just had to pay our £140 to hire a car for a week to get back and forth to work (plus the missus is having a baby and is grouchy!)
