Servicing Options for 1.2 16v

  Chocolate Bar™

im going to book my car in for a service soon, and was considering taking my own parts instead of using some of renaults. i was going to have them put shell helix plus oil in it, and some branded spark plugs like NGK.. however im not sure if its worth it, and what parts i should use.

i was considering upgrading my HT leads as well, but again im not sure if its worth it.

there is also the warranty, and would changing plugs and oil affect any possible warranty work, as i cant see how it would affect it to be honest.

any help appreciated - mark.

What service is it going in for?

Mine is going in for its 36,000 service this month probably and my local dealer want £270 + VAT!

I have no warranty so Im buying all the parts and taking it to a garage to be serviced.

its for its 18k first service, and its still got 18months to run on the warranty, and so if i do take my own parts i dont want to invalidate anything

most garrages wont use your parts for a service as they cant guarrent them or the work with pats they have supplied

oh i see - so the best thing would be to give them a ring and then see what they say. i was going to do that anyway, but was just wondering what peoples opinions were on actually changing the oil / plugs etc.

you can ask the garrage who service it to use the requested parts you wont but they will have to buy them,, just puts the price up, but worth it if ya got the money,, if not buy the parts n do it your self

i was going to just upgrade the components they normally use.. so it would be more expensive. however i feel it could be worth it as ill know exactly whats been used, and hopefully it should make the car run smoother

Any decient oil of the same spec Renault recomend should be fine. New plugs ant needed but the 1.2s can go though them faster that they should do.

there is also the warranty, and would changing plugs and oil affect any possible warranty work, as i cant see how it would affect it to be honest. If the service is done by a VAT registered garage and they use the ofical Renault bits and stamp the book the car is still under full warently its a law.

Just a quick note, u cant change the HT leads on a 1.2 16v as ther are directly connected to the coil pack

hence no one makes any alternative apart from standard renault coilpack, unless its faulty leave it alone.

damn, Has and Fred beat me to it! But yeah, what they said, cant change the leads and I wasnt even able to find any uprated plugs for it hence mine is still spluutering unhealthily away awaiting it 36k service whilst running on knackered plugs and crapped up air filter and 18400m old oil.

send it in early then Liam hehe!! I cant wait for mine to come along, but my wallet can LOL............my only question is.............is it worth supplying my own oil and which type? Rob.

Not early at all Rob - almost 400 miles overdue now!

Had a new coil/leads about 1400 miles ago, new brakes a good few thousand miles ago, but all the plugs, filters and fluids have been on it since the 18k service... is starting to feel like it as well. Every weekend I plan to do it all and something always comes up - party to go to tonight, hangover to nurse tomorrow. Working next weekend then. Ah well, I guess Itlll have to be done - Im going to go with the Elf stuff that they put in from the factory, or Shell Helix, but Ill probably stick with Elf.
