Newsleecher program ($19.99 for a year) Why do I need this?
Giganews account ($25 a month for unlimited) Yeah, no probs
Newzbin.com account (think its 12p a week) Do I need this if I already know someone else's login and password to the newzbin site?
winrar to extract the files Got this
quickpar to fix files if they have gone a bit wrong when Dl ing. Will get this.

So... can I just get all this along with my existing AOL account and I'm away?

If you are going to go with news groups, i recomend you go for the unlimited one, i think the most i've had over it is way over 40GBb in a month, its easy as to use, fast and worth the $$ imo.
if you get newsleacher dont opt for the one with super search, go for the 2 years one for $25 (i think thats what it was) as the super search is rubish.

woke up today, oh lost is out set it up for DL, go for a shower and its finished by the time im done.

What you need alltogether.
Newsleacher programe ($25 for a year / 2 years)
Giganews account ($25 a month for unlimmited)
newsbin.com account (think its 12p a week)
winrar to extract the files
quickpar to fix files if they have gone a bit wrong when Dl ing.

thats about it.

Good post.

Why choose Newsleecher over Newsbinz Pro though out of interest?

Newsbin Pro 5 is the daddy. I purchased one license over two years ago (with v4) and have upgraded free top v5 and used the same license on 4 of my PCs with no issues. It's a superb program.

You need Newsleecher/Newsbin Pro as that is your client (i.e that's the software you open, to capture the file/binary of your choice).

You can probably get away with using your existing logon details to Newzbin.

Yes it will work over your standard AOl connection.

^ Ok, thats good. So why do I need a Giganews account as well? What does that do for that much a month? :S

I think that will be my final question. lol.

Hey Scutch, I use giganews, and it's great

I share my newzbin account with a mate, and also the actual giganews account (hehe), although you can't log on at the same time :clown:

I use Grabit for my client, totally free, works perfect

I see. Hmm..

Scutch, the only question you need to ask yourself is do you want to download your (legal) files at c.1000K/s? (which is the theory max of your 8mb pipe)

If the answer is yes than it's a no brainer. It is tricky to get to grips with initially, but you seem like an intelligent guy and you will have the support of folks on here should you have any issues or questions.

Indeed, but a lot of people are saying once I have the Giganews account I dont need anything else to download the files. I think I do given that a few of you are saying about newsbin Pro and also Newsleecher.
Also, as above, he uses Grabit, which is totally free apparently? What gives? Its just puzzling. But once I get the drift, I'll go for it.

Roy don't let him fool you, Scutch isn't the brightest chap around here - In fact I think him and Lusty have a lot in common :)

My mate gave me his username and password 2 weeks ago for his newgroup and its great. I downloaded newsleacher at "minimal cost" (pm me) and login into newzbin, and then bingo, thats all you need to download! You need a program to unpack/fix the files, but they're free

Its easy :D

Ok, check dis out.

I will try and get the Giganews account set up soon.
However, its the Newsbin Pro and Newsleecher thing that I'm confused about. My mate, who is also on it, says he can put Newsleecher program on a disc (2.5mb) I then install the program and enter the details I get from my Giganews account. I have a password and login for newzbin.com and they are very similar to the search engine newsleecher uses. Or something.

So why do I need to pay $19.99 or $34.99 unlimited for either Newsleecher OR Newsbin Pro?

Thanks :)

Or use linux and get your binary newsreader for free.. take your pick BNR2 and PAN are my favs.. ;)

Newsleecher etc are just clients to download the information for you. In the client, you enter your giganews account details, and the client then downloads from their servers.

So be it Newsbin Pro\Newsleecher\Grabit, they are all just clients, and it's up to you whether you 'pay' for these or not ;) But as I said before Grabit is a good start, i'd just sort the giganews account first, and you'll be up and running in 5 mins once you have that :)

So if my mate says he has Newsleecher as a program on a CD, I wont need to pay $19.99 for it? What are the perks of paying for it rather than just using a copy off a disc? Other than the legal aspect.

Product updates, that's about all I expect. You dont need to get it off your mate though, they'll all there on torrent sites.

Thanks James. Is that a weekly/monthly charge too?

I checked out your guide. Very handy. Top stuff :)

binsearch is free but it's "basic". Newzbin is much better imo and only costs pennies anyway.

Edit - Membership to Newzbin also gives you access to their sister site too - (Google Newzxxx) but I wouldn't know anything about that ;)

I have no idea what you mean... at the moment... ;)

Also, what can I do on www.giganews.com? I dont seem to be using it, getting more use from newzbin.

You should rarely have to bother with it at all. As long you keep paying, you'll be authenticated on their servers when your neswreader (Newsbin Pro or Newsleacher etc.) tries to connect. I think the only time I've visited the UNS website (giganews for you) in the last 6 months was when I couldn't download anything and I checked their service status (which revealed a hardware upgrade in progress yadda yadda)

If you don't need to visit giganews then they're doing a good job (not sure on their renewal terms though - mine is automatic at UNS)

It sounds to me like your're good to roll scutchmeister

NB: You'll find you get maximum download speed with the maximum number of simultaneous connections setup in Newsleecher. I think your giganews account allows up to 20, which is good.

When on Newzbin, can I get search results from before Feb? Like, I'm searching for "something" (which I have on DVD anyway) and its finding the new episodes, but only goes back to Feb 19th or so. Is that the limit or something? There must be so many more?

"Retention"..

Different news providers have different retention periods. Newzbin will allow you to search back as far as you want (or as far as you select in the Global preferences - http://v3.newzbin.com/account/preferences/) but you can only download articles (files) that are supported by the retention period of your provider.

Edit - Giganews has 120 days retention so set the retention level in Newzbins preferences to 120 days.

^^120 days and 20 connections?

Strewth, I might consider migrating from UNS, especially when my pipe is upgraded to 20mb :approve:

Newsdemon is worth a look Roy.

They've had 20 connections on their unlimted "tariff" for a while now and it's less than £13. Ok it's "only" 85 days retention but if you use Usenet a lot retention becomes less of an issue.

I'm one of the lucky ones to get a constant 2.2Mb/s from my ADSL2+ connection with them.

Yeah I tend to follow the stuff I need quite regularly mate, so retention isn't a major issue. In fact I've rarely had any issues with UNS @ 90 days (now 101 days).

The 20 connections does appeal though. I have to be honest and say I've never really understood how the connection thing works other than knowing I've always had faster speeds using the max available. I figure 20 connections on 20mb would be spot on ;)
