Shift Light Variance

  Elise S1 B&C 140
Just noticed today my shift light usually comes on at around 6800rpm. I very raley see it as i dont usually rev the car this hard. However ive just been out for a bit of a play at lunch and it has started coming on at around 6100rpm and actually hit the limiter at about 6500.

Is it variable with engine temperature as normally i give the car a good 15 mins to warm up but today probs only half that. By the time i was on the way back (after 20 mins) it was performing as normal again i.e 6800rpm. Was this a blip in the electronics or are they designed to do it??

Has anyone else experienced this?

Cheers
Rich

Hmmmm would be interesting to find this out. I have a 172FF 2002, will mine have it on? I rarely go above 5 at the moment because there is a loud rattle noise anfd has been since I got it.

Where about on the dash does it come up?

Mine does it, won't rev above 6800ish when cold but goes up to 7250 when warm.

I've seen the light in 5th ;)

Just down the right bottom of the speedo it looks like a little gear lever. lights up green when you shoul change gear (should light up when you turn the ignition on also) i believe all 172/182 have them?

And, no, you can't tell whether its warm enough from the water termperature. That comes up pretty quickly. It seems to depend on something that takes significantly longer to come up to temperature, like oil.

I noticed it the same when I was doing precise fuel consumption tests. I thought the car was warmed up because the water temperature had reached normal and ran the fuel consumption tests. Then about 10 minutes later (it was a cold night) halfway through the tests the fuel consumption suddenly shifted to a lower level, and I had to chuck all the results away and start the tests again.

Yeah a car is never warmed properly the second the water guage gets to temp the oil takes almost twice as long

Well technically you aren't really thrashing it as that is what the light is designed to do, they have a sport badge on them for a reason! It's also there to let you know you are about to hit the limiter. :)

Its based off oil temp, not the water temp as you've said.

It's also set differently in first and second gear, to stop it pinging off the limiter so quickly, I think!

last time i checked, definetely had a lower rev limit in the first two gears anyway!

Its supposed to be lower limiter so the light comes on lower as it just comes on in theory 300rpm before the red line. Some cars seem to be funny with respect to this.

I don't think they all came out with them. I have a ph1 172 and it does not have one...

shift light is lot lower when cold ,so many different variance therafter .

higher when warm , does also depend on high rev limiters .
i know some1 with 8k limit

Mine takes at least 15mins to be fully wamed up. I can tell the difference when you put your foot down if you do it after 5mins then 15mins. Reva a lot free'er.

I've hit the limiter a few times in 2nd and 3rd but never notice the light come on.

On my private motorway, the light came on when the speedo was showing 145, no idea how fast that actually is, pretty well top speed so just under 140 i spose
