Should I get the ecu

  172, Tiguan

Honest opinions please. I have spoken to Nick Hill and am on the verge of ordering, is it worth it? Honestly, does it make that much difference? And is it worth the cost?

thanks all.

Youre talking about the Grp N one, yeah?

Mines been in for six days, and I was hanging on to really get a feel for what its done before putting my thoughts up, but you sound like you need a gentle nudge in the right direction ;).

Knowing what the car drives like now compared to how it was before, would I buy one again if need be? Without hesitation.

Whats it done? It seems to have (seat of the pants dyno only) filled out the mid-range, which means that its a lot more eager up to 4k. The throttle response I feel is sharper too, at times its like theres a direct link between your ankle muscles and the front wheels! The urge from 5k onwards is maybe a little stronger than before, and it seems to hold on to its power comfortably into the red now as well. But its the fact that the ECU doesnt call a halt to proceedings at 7250rpm that does it for me. I found that with the OE ECU, even after Id got used to the car itself, I still on ocassions found myself bouncing off the limiter, such was the pace that it went from 5k to 7k. With the new ECU Im probably changing up a little earlier than before, as I know that if I "need" to hang on to each gear a little longer, I can.

Im quite tempted to leave it fitted for a few more weeks, then re-fit the old one again to see if it feels gutless.

To sum up...GET ONE NOW...:D

thank you, that was exactly the response i was after!

has it affected the fuel consumption at all?

Too early to say yet. I always check the actual figure (trip computers are s**t for accuracy) and prior to fitting it always got 31-34 mpg. Ill be filling up at the weekend so itll be interesting to see what I get (if its relevant, my normal driving is 50% motorways, 30% DCs + RAs, 20% urban).

personally i wouldnt bother, but thats just my own opinion, this isnt based on experience of driving with one fitted, just simply that the potential financial nightmare of something drastically going wrong with the engine and not being able to put the std ecu back on and renault walking a million miles outways the smile on my face whilst driving with one fitted

yes some will say i should live for the moment but i cant justify the risk to myself however if it doesnt bother you then get one.......seems like they do the trick

Id had that argument with myself on many, many ocassions. As a, dare I say it, accountant by trade, Ive spent my entire life justifying risk vs reward, and on that basis Id have never bought the ECU.

But my Cup is a present to myself after years of hard work and sh*t cars and I just though "f*** it!" and bought the ECU.

I may live to regret it but at the moment my cheeks ache from the constant inane grin on my face :D

surely you can swop it back with no prosb..is that right..that means warranty issues should be ok???????? i really want one to..just got to get austrailia out of the way and thats me done!!!

I have a R SPORT ECU and had to remove it for some warrenty work and I can truthfully say you cant tell its not in there (apart from lower limit) I have also raced a Cup (ktec exhaust) when I had the chip on there and he actually beat me by half a car 30-110 (with me pulling on him a bit in 3rd then coming back in 4th) It really is all in your head imho.

Another interesting thing is when I used to race my bros 172 he could tell when I had dragged it over 7250 as he could see he was eaking back on me ever so slightly until I changed gear again and hit the meat of the next gear!
