Should i go back to a 172....

Righty ho,

well I'm thinking about selling the Evo. I just don't use it much these days as I'm proper getting into the biking thing. I commute to work on my little 125, so evo only gets used at the weekends. As much fun as it is, it is just money wasting away most of the time on the driveway.... I aim to do my bike test in the next few months and get a bigger bike :D

I still need a car however - as good as a bike is, its rubbish for taking people or carrying anything other than a rucksack! I had a 172 a few years ago, was great fun until a bus driver decided to write it off for me. I bought a ctr after that, which to be honest wasn't as much fun to drive, but did sound fantastic on full chat.

I want to buy a fairly cheap car (so i can buy a bigger bike too), keep it for a year or so and then sell everything on and get a faster car again. thinking a shelby gt500 perhaps...... 172's seems to be going for around the 5/5.5k mark now so this seems like a good buy given the perfomance/cost ratio. Is a 182 really worth the extra 1.5k? I have driven both, and I really couldn't tell much difference between them.

Maybe I shouldn't buy a clio at all, but for around the same money I'm looking at much older cars - 10yr old scoobys/ teg dc2 etc. What would you buy??

Ta muchly

if i had the money id have a dc2 mate,iv had a scoob, great fun but can be costly,so no real difference in that and you keeping the evo

i'm going the opposite way , thinking of selling the cup again as new car fever is here again :S must resist :quiet:

DC2... i traded my 182 in for one, and have never looked back. They ARE very good cars... not that the clio isnt a good car, but the teg is just awesome.

for a renault forum, I'm surprised at the replies! I drove a 172 cup when it first came out, and to be honest, althought it felt more raw, I rather have the little creature comforts and loose 0.1 of a second or whatever it is. I had a look at some DC's, and the interior is truely awful! those plastics, seriously, what were they thinking (or not!)

As much as I would love a trophy, I honestly can't see it losing quite a bit more money still, so I think I'll have to give it a miss...........

Sounds like a 172 would fit the bill. Cheap to run, quick enough for what it is and will give you the grin factor. The only thing I would say though is that I'd be tempted to get a 182 as I prefer the cupped suspension. I also prefer the look of the 182 - better rear spoiler, nicer alloys and twin exhausts - but just IMO.

For the overall performance vs running costs and initial outlay the RS Clio's are hard to beat.
What concerns me most however is the residuals which seem to have taken a tumble recently (and not just on this site) this is one of the reasons why I didn't get one.
Part of me says get a 182 as they are the newest model so likely to be less problems, lower mileage etc, however these are still depreciating.
The Trophy's used to hold their money very well for a french car but the launch of the 197 has caused these to drop alot, not to mention the fact the purchase cost would be higher.

ph1 172's are dirt cheap and are often said to be the best, however the interior is a little dated and they are getting to the age where things start to need replacing. Having said that, how much lower can they drop below £3k.

172FF or Cup is your best bet for around £5k, just make sure you get one that has had its cambelt done. I would also try to get one is a rarer colour such as Flame or Monaco as this may make it more desirable a year on when you come to sell it.
A CTR would probably be the safest bet though, sorry didnt mean to write so much!
