You can use simple file sharing if you like but your best off using proper NTFS permissions (gets a little more complicated though).

simple file sharing:
Right click a folder you would like to share and click - sharing and secuirty. Then click share this folder.

Permissions:
Everyone will beable to read from this folder on the network now. Make sure you allow file sharing on your firewall.

Printer:

Right-click your printer and click share - then on your laptop - add printer and choose network printer and then look for the printer.

Go one step further:

create a local account on your desktop PC (say laptop with a password). On your desktop logged in under admin account(main account) instead of sharing your folder for everyone under share permissions untick it and just add the user laptop. Now you can give this user more permission like full control.

So when you connect to the desktop pc with your lappy you log in with the laptop account with password.

surely you will have to add them to a workgroup first though so they can see each other?

  172 cup'd extreme
rename both computers and ensure they have the same "workgroup name"
do this by right click my computer properties "computer name" tab
at the bottom it says "to rename this computer or join a domain click change" - click change ensure workgroup is selected and both computers have the same name.

restart both when prompted to

then right click on the items you want to share ie c drive and printer and choose "sharing and security" click share this folder allow users to change my files.

once you have done that go in my computer , along the top click "tools" and "map network drive" choose a drive letter and explore to your other computers shared drive or folder

also share printers in the same way by adding printer > add network printer etc

Got it working fine using the above setup

The only problem ive got though is that i cant see the shared files that im sharing on the pc from the laptop

when i go to "tools" and "map network drive" choose a drive letter and explore to your other computers shared drive or folder on the Main pc i can view the folders im sharing over on the lappy

But when i do the same on the laptop...Tools -> map network drive and browse for folder

Under Microsoft windows network - > Workgroup the laptop and main pc are shown but when i click the + sign next to the main computer theres no folders shown

Dunno if you guys understand that :S

Just strange i can view the folders im sharing on the laptop but cant view them on the pc from the laptop

Any ideas guys?

Thanks
