Simple Upgrade Advice required

  LOTS!
Hello all,

What size speakers seit in a MK2 172??? Front & Back please?

Then, if I were just to upgrade those components what would you guys recommend? I don't really want to start buying amps etc. just want to upgrade what's in the doors for a better quality of sound.

Is there any point or is the standard stuff as good as it gets without significant work?

I've already got "MTX" tweeters wired up - they were in the car when I got it. Suspect the previous owner was quite in to their ICE as I keep finding hidden bits of wiring in the boot! :)

if you have MTX tweeters already installed, i'd think about just upgrading the mids to Genesis A13 mids

standard stuff is worse than a big pair of mustard y-fronts, that's how pants they are

standard fitment is 13cm/5.25" mid

Hmm - OK thanks. I've been looking around and can see that the MTX tweeters are likely to be plugged in to a crossover somewhere? Don't know where that is? Or is it integral to the standard head unit?

Wish I understood ICE stuff! I can do sound engineering and the likes no problem, even got an A-level in it! but all the in car stuff baffles me. ;)

you will probably find the tweeters connected to the OE wiring, therefore recieving a full range sound, not higher range as supposed to. You could buy a complete set of components and fit them, but using the existing wiring will still be setrimenta to the quality of the sound as the OE tweeters had a filter on them which filters the frequencies iirc.

best way to do it all

rip out all the speakers, fit new speakers and completely new wiring from the head unit

shouldn't take more than 2 hours maximum to strip it and re-fit it all

Just be glad your tweeter covers don't rattle like mine do. Fudging things drive me nuts!!
custom fibreglass housing?
remove and re-fit with a nice thin weatherseal/gasket

plenty of options available ;)

Last silly question then... (p.s. good advice re. the components etc)... Is it worth putting rubber washers between the speaker and the door when screwing them in to place? does it help to prevent rattling?

Bryan, any idea where i can find a suitable seal?

It appears to me only my passenger side tweeter cover that makes a noise (you can turn it anti or clockwise with your fingers. And i was actually thinking of just superglueing the damn cover down to prevent this movement which is causing a rattle.

A seal sounds better though, so any ideas mate?

Hi, I agree with the advice of pulling out the existing tweeters and fitting new component set. You never know what they have had done to them.

I too am looking at doing this for my 182 and have seen mentioned in other threads;

Rainbow SLX265 & Rainbow SLX 230

Check - Caraudiodirect.co.uk

Look decent and a fair price. Was looking at Kenwood components but will go for these I think!

Jono, if you need some help installing your ICE then I would be happy to help.

PM me and we'll sort it out.
