simple upgrade

Hi all... just a couple of questions... I want to fit new speakers in the front of my Mk2 172... thing is I like that the original head unit is nice and neat and matches the dash.I understand I wont get great quality sound out of this..

So my question is... if I just upgrade the front components.. can I use the original wires?? or do they have the filters built into them?

secondly ... if I fit an amp... will it be pointless running it from the speaker output from the back of the head unit.. ie not phonos as the head unit doesnt have them...

what Im really trying to do is get the best I can on a budget using the original head unit..

Any help muchly appreciated

well i always say, when you fit a new head unit you will notice such a difference in sound quality. You can find some nice head units that match the dash well.

My pioneer 7400mp has orange lights to match the dash lights and silver trim that fits in well.

You can fit new speakers and just keep the original wiring no problem.

You can run an amp of the speaker cable, however the sound quality would be better if it was run off an rca.

as above,

though any most head units will look at home in your clio, many now have either amber of green lighting,

i have a alpine 7893r and with the amber lighting looks so at home in the clios dash

I have some line converters which convert the speaker outputs from the stereo into rca connections, they work ok, i find the stereo pretty good really, but a new head unit would improve the quality a great deal. the main thing i find is that different song sound better with more bass or treble than others, so a new head unit with some sort of graphic equaliser presets would be hell of a lot more user friendly.

Ok thanks guys... some useful info there... ClioJohn that pioneer HU looks very cool... I can see how it would blend in...

maff those rca adaptors sound like they might be a good idea for the time being until I decide to do the head unit.

Where do you guys normally fit the amps? under the seat?? it would be nice to get it behind the dash to minimise wiring, but I bet its crammed behind there..

mine is on the back of my bass box in the boot. some people screw them to the back of the rear seat. some under front seats and some build a false floor in the boot to conceal them. It just depends how big a syatem you want to build. things to bear in mind though are, a good ground for the amp and a good air flow to cool the amp down, else it will cut out if it overheats (this depends on the size of the amp though, bigger ones heat up more).

Ok so when I fit my new components... how do u usualy wire them?? for each speaker does a single pair of wires come out of the head unit and into a crossover behind the dash?? or is it configured some other way? I wanted to use the original wiring and iso connector

i think a single speaker cable comes out of the head unit then connects to the crossover, from there 2 speaker cables come out, 1 to the tweeter and the other to the main speaker. ( all that happens for each side)
