Is it worth getting a skimmed head for my mk1 RT?

What are the pros and cons of it?

Cheers.

It only needs doing if your changing the head gasket mate.

Pros being that it means your gasket will fit properly.
Cons are that it costs money!

depends how much you get it skimmed, pros are that your engine runs at a higher compression so you get more power ive been told a con can be more stress on the camshafts i think it was but my mate who mods cars said as long as you dont go to far your ok.

mine is getting it done after christmas. my mate got it done on his 1.4 rover and it was pulling harder, it also started wheelspining 17s when pulling away hard which it never used to do

you mean crankshaft

But yes, it'll have bbetr rsponse, better economy-to an extent, and dont take too much off.

If the heads off, why not get headworkat the same time!

Do you know anybody that can do good/competitively priced headwork around Essex?

And what gains will I get and how bad will hurt my overdraft?!

Thanks.

Searching old posts, some people say it's worth getting a 1.8 throttle body, is this correct? and i'm assuming it's from the 1.8rt? and also, something else about a direct fiit 1.6 BE or something? What's that and where can i get it from?

Do you know what companies would do the headwork and what is involved..

cheers.

you can get headwork done on an 8valve for around 100

One of my properly done 8v heads will cost you about £450, and with an all out job costing between £600-800.

I dont know any decent porter who will bother to put his hand to a head for £250, there is no point really.

I'd stay well clear of £100 heads lol

Ben is about the best around for headwork, i'm guessing its hte 1.8 16v they are obout putting bodies on

you can fit an RSi throttle body to the 1.4 engine, which gives a good gain. You can also use the 1.6 bottom end from an 8v megane or clio. IIRC you can get the 1.4 to 130bhp before putting the 1.6 bottom end on.

Yeah i've seen BenR's work, it's quality!

Has anybody on here/other Renault forum had a 1.6 bottom end or the 1.8 TB, what gains could I expect?

1.6 bottom end with the right ecu/remap should take you to 90bhp (thats what the 1.6 has as standard) as for the 1.8 TB, i dont know, yet..

Ok now I need money! if anybody else has any info, would be greatly appreciated ;)

1.6 8V K7M is just a bored out 1.4 energy bottom so will bolt directly on...as said they're found on mk1 phase 1 meganes and some mk2 clios.

1.8 SPI TB will fit onto the 1.4 engine and will give some power increase, however, you'd ideally need headwork (and perhaps cam) to benefit from it.

As for headwork, yes, we've all seen Bens work and its excellent stuff but you can certainly get good gains for less (i.e about the couple hundred quid mark). Speak to Chris H over on www.retro-renault.com or www.f7power.com for further info as he can do it and won't charge 'cliosport prices'.

Why?
Company i used to work for did 8 valve heads for 100, obviously you supply the head.

and before you start saying its a cow boy garage etc etc, we used to build the engines for the btcc alfa 156 touring cars. http://www.rusperalfaromeo.co.uk/

£100 doesnt even cover machining and cleaning costs, yet alone any actual port work which takes hours and hours.

Chris H is brilliant, got 13bhp gains on meddy clios 1.4 8v

Agreed, and he knows the engines inside out.

I'm getting him to do my 1.2 head after seeing that...expecting good gains from that too :)
