Sky HD Box

Car  A4 Avant
I need to repalce my exsiting sky+ box. Where can I get the cheapest Sky HD box from? Direct from Sky?

If I already have skysports do I still have to pay the extra £10 per month for HD? Do I need anything else other than a Sky HD box to get up and running?

You have to pay the £10 no matter what package you have :(

You only need the box as you'll have the dual lines from having Sky+. I think Comet were doing it cheap, but you had to sign up for SkyTalk (Free) or something like that.

Comet can do the box for £50 if I'm a new customer and jump through hoops.

Ideally I just want to try and purchase the box and upgrade my account to receive HD.

Is the Virgin HD package any good?

I'm facing the same problem, I'd upgrade tomorrow if I could get the box at a decent price plus they want to charge £60 for install.

As an existing customer the cheapest place is Sky. If you sign up to their phone and broadband package you can get it even cheaper.

All you'll need to do is swap the boxes over and then call Sky to pair the viewing card to the new box.

This is if you order the box via sky

Sky state that they have to send an engineeer to install the new box and thus charge an an install fee. Total rip off as said it's just a case of swapping them over and upgrading the package to HD.

What Sky state and what happens are two seperate things. My parents recently upgraded to Sky HD and were quoted the £60 "install" fee but a few choice words later and the threat of cancellation and they waivered the charge.

I remember a few months back Sky offered me HD for £165.00 all in but I had to move my Telephone and Broard band to them.

Not sure if you can get a better deal now?

I "think" it's £149 now if you take up their phone and BB products as well.

I don't mind paying £150 but i've been out of contract for 2 years and ideally didn't want to start a new one as I'm not sure if i'll be moving this summer.

If I don't take up the £10 per month HD bit, would a HD box still work like the sky+ box? I'm thinking of buying the box but not subscribing to the HD service and waiting until I've moved.

yeah, if you don't buy the box from sky, you will still get all the free to air hd channels though.

Which channels are free to air?
Where else can I get a Sky HD box from?
Do I just put my sky card in and i'll get all my channels?

BBC HD, Channel 4 HD and i think thats it...
You can get a box from eBay.
Yes, put your card in register the box with Sky and then all is good.

Anywhere else other than ebay?
Just phone sky up to register the box? I don't need to renew my contract do I?

You need to call Sky and pair the card to the box. They'll just ask for the viewing card number, box serial and version number. You'll also have to upgrade your account and subscribe to the HD channels (if you so wish).

Ok, Sky have offered me a half decent price for the HD box, but they aren't willing to budge on the £60 installation fee. Is there anyway around this? Theres no way I'm paying £60 for someone to connect 3 cables into the back of the box and one into the telly!

Well they won't budge on the £60 install, but I've gone for it anyway.

Sky HD is coming Monday! Woo woo!

Make sure you perform a forced software update as most "engineers" can't be bothered when they install it.

Apart from that turn Anytime on, wait a couple of days, and it should start filling with stuff. Some of it is crap but you get the odd gem like we did with Zulu at the weekend.

How do you force the update?

I must admit the last installer was great, he was a blue nose though.

I'll turn anytime on then. Is that on Sky+ as well?

Turn the power off to the box, hold down "backup" (on the box itself not the remote), turn the power back on and keep backup held down for about 15 - 20 seconds. You'll see all the lights on the front of the box come on and a message is displayed on the tv telling you a software update is being carried out.

"Anytime" is on the later Sky+ boxes but not the early generation.

I was going to get charged £30 for the installation of a standard sky+ box, but I was told by a clueless woman over the phone before I signed up that it would be free as the house already had the sky dish...

So a letter of complaint later to head office and I had the £30 refunded.. ;)
